The Avenue of the Dead: A Thriller That Really Thrills
18 February 2015
There is a goody in this book that the author has kindly given the reader. It is the short story, The Devil You Know which is part of the After Armageddon collection. It serves as a great prequel to this gripping thriller as it introduces Detective Juan Morales who leads the murder inquiry in Avenue of the Dead.
The Avenue of the Dead is actually the remains of sacrificial territory used by the Pre Aztecs. There is an archeological study going on. The chief archeologist becomes caught up in the thriller plot and the tension I have to say reading this book was almost unbearable at times. Yes, it's that exciting.
The horrific history of sacrifice is woven into the plot. Someone is killing people ritualistically in modern day Mexico City and the police are on the case, but they can't seem to get the culprit.
If you find history as fascinating as I do, this is for you and if you are particularly interested in the spectacular ancient history of Mexico, the book is a keeper!
The characters jump off the page they are so real, I was so caught up with their dialogue, I heard them speaking. Then I started guessing. I started to think one way in my search for a solution only to be wrong- footed by the very clever and adept Mr Porter. Yes, he kept me guessing only I guessed wrong.
I don't want to give away too much, but I will say that this is my favorite Porter novel, but I have a feeling I always say that! Maybe it's the history, the excitement, the clever twists and turns? Whatever it is, Avenue of the Dead is not to be missed. Honestly!
