This album from the Norrbotten Big Band, recorded 2009 in a studio in New York City , is a welcome addition to my collection of Big Band cd's and takes the Band to a new level after their wonderful album entitled "Worth the Wait" recorded live in Sweden in 2006 . Like the previous album "The Avatar Sessions" features the writing skills of Tim Hagans who is a very fine trumpet player and also the Artistic Director of the Norrbotten Big Band.
The Band is propelled by the clean , crisp , driving drums of Peter Erskine and the pulsating bass of Rufus Reid , just two of the guest soloists on this excellent album.
The album opens with "Buckeyes" - with solos from guest - George Garzone on tnr sax,Tim Hagans on tpt and Peter Erskine on drums. Next up Randy Brecker takes a wonderful solo on "Boo", a composition specially written for him ,with further offerings from Hagans and another guest Vic Juris on gtr. " Box of Cannoli" follows and starts off at a fast tempo but midway through a ballad section is introduced and after a fine piano solo the starting tempo is restored. Dave Liebman is featured on sop sax on the lovely "Here with Me " which demonstrates the wonderful section playing of the Band. "Palt Seanuts " sees the band paying homage to the Beboppers and Hagans and Erskine are amongst the featured soloists. "Rufus at Gilly's" is a feature for Reid's wonderful double bass playing and the album finishes in style with "Song for Mirka" featuring Dan Johansson ,the tune's co-composer on Flugelhorn.
Very Highly Recommended and the icing on the top of the cake if that is possible ! ,is that the cd comes in a case
that contains photographs of the recording sessions and also includes a 14 page booklet - Don't think you can beat that !

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding contemporary big band jazz played by brilliant musicians 20 Aug. 2010
By dearly1961 - Published on
That's right Amazon- this has nothing to do with the film Avatar, but someone mistakenly put it in the Soundtracks category, fortunately for me. I knew about The Avatar Sessions: The Music Of Tim Hagans because I have the world-class jazz drummer Peter Erskine, who plays on this album, on my Facebook News Feed. He posted a link on Facebook to a review of this album, released by his record company Fuzzy Music in March 2010. I have been wanting to get this since it came out. It also features longtime jazz trumpet great Randy Brecker, trumpeter Tim Hagans, Dave Liebman, George Garzone, Rufus Reid and the Norrbotten Big Band from Sweden. Hagans and Erskine first collaborated in the early 70's with the legendary Stan Kenton and his Orchestra. If you like original-sounding big band jazz with a unique 21st century atmosphere, this is a must have! Amazon- please move this to the Jazz section of the $5 mp3 Downloads. You may edit this review as necessary after you do this, to better serve the jazz fans who are browsing for deals.

There is some good stuff on it, but it's a little out on the edge for me.
