The amount of music available in the ambient genre market is huge. With so much to choose from it can quickly become bewildering and it's too easy to get lumbered with something decidedly ordinary.
Among those you can choose from are Swedish musician Stefan Jonsson who calls himself Between Interval. So what of his 2006 offering 'Autumn Continent'?
The title track opens in solemn mood and this is maintained with low frequency synth sound sweeping slowly in and out.The next track, 'Submerged', is probably the most inventive on the album with a floating world giving way to an early Kraftwerk like synth styling which is joined by Vangelis like bells. There is a definite sense of an underwater world and the use of subtle & ethereal synth voices also add a feeling of John Foxx's 'Cathedral Oceans' projects. The gentleness of this track washes over the listener.'Hidden Wastelands' see's growling electronic landscapes moving in and out, slowly building in intensity until a connecting motif returns to see the track out. 'Tides of time' Employs a theme that is very similar to that of 'Europe Endless' from the 'Trans europe express' album by Kraftwerk. This is overlayed by a discordant sound before the whole being joined together by a simple but haunting melody.
'Expanding area' is 11 minutes of huge undulating dark soundscapes with single note motifs that shimmer in and out. A feeling of barren wastelands with winds blowing across is produced before it segueways into the next track.
'Early life remainings' see's a similar landscape as before being joined by a John Carpenter like keyboard and for the first time on the album some drum programming. In truth, while not terrible, this doesn't gel well with the otherworldly feel of the rest of the album.

I had bought the previous disc, Secret Observatory a few months ago and thought I'd give this one a go, seeing as I approved of the previous. It turns out I like this one even better. Eerie, flowing, dreamy, oddly quirky yet serene. This really is a must for any drifting ambient collector's stack of faves. I love it. It moves, it bubbles, it dances and sails effortlessly without being contrived or laboured. It is, of course, so smooth that is sort of defies description, being as it is, meditative and atmospheric in nature. Look, just put yer money down and buy it. It really is fantastic. How do you know that your taste is similar to mine? Well, you'll have to risk it. This is a highly hypnotic disc, assembled by a master who apparently knows exactly how to shape a soundscape. It's misty, autumnal and comes out at dawn and dusk to beguile you with beauty.
