What a totally moving end to the trilogy of the various families from Eltham. Daniel’s final years are dominated by nostalgia for the past. What might have been? The tragedy of his marriage to Rosie; his great love in Ceylon; the ménage de trois with Christobel and Gaskell. Such memories.
This is the saddest and most poignant novel I’ve ever read. And the very best. I feel very emotional, having come to the end.

I have read the trilogy which carried us through a huge swathe of time over the family’s lives and also a huge sweep of world history. How their lives were interwoven with struggles for love and understanding of themselves and others that came in and out of their story. Essentially it’s a story of love, letting go and
acceptance - but mostly of love, in all its complexity. I had an emotional and very raw response to many of the situations that affected their lives and leaving them at the end of the last book was just as I’ve written above. I loved it and had great difficulty letting go but accepted that I’d been privileged to have been allowed to live through it all with them.
I will always remember the beautiful phrase, ‘it is the dust that falls from dreams’.

Louis de Bernieres has done it again. What depth, joy and pathos. His characters come alive. This final book in the trilogy could be depressing but isn't. We are reminded of the inevitability of death but, for me, not to be morbid or depressed but to remember that it is part of life and we should use the time we have before it comes to repair relationships and encourage recomciliation.
