4.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Maya 2014 13 May 2014

I've used many 3D programs over the years, from Impulse's Imagine for DOS, Caligari's Truespace 2 all the way through 3DS Max 2014, Modo, Zbrush, etc. I decided to dabble a bit in Maya and learn something new. This book is a good introduction to Maya and walks you through modelling the "man" on the cover. It is relatively easy to follow and has good illustrations.

The reason I subtracted one star is that I would have liked it to have gone into just a little more depth with respect to rendering, lighting and textures. While I understand there are whole books on the subject, the chapters in this book fall a little short regarding those topics.I would let that dissuade you from purchasing the book however.

Really great way to learn Maya. Following these instructions chapter by chapter is really useful. My daughter took a class in Maya and had some difficulties with the process. This book clarified the process and showed another way to put something together in Maya.

Changes some items around from the 2013 version to streamline it perfectly.

5.0 out of 5 stars All you need to get started in Autodesk Maya 2014 26 Nov. 2013

This is a perfect solution for the complete entrance level user of Autodesk Maya 2014. It explains basic polygonal modeling, jointing, skinning, weight painting and rigging, proper UV procedures, lighting and animating. Although the entire process can seem certainly overwhelming at first, and the book covers a broad range of specialized skills sets, there is nothing on the entry level that this book does not cover, and it does so in a clear, comprehensible voice. Definitely happy I picked this up. Look no further.
