Product Description

From the Author

For the life of your Aussie---and the time of your life!
Not your average breed of dog, Aussies are versatile workers and companions. Some earn their keep as working ranch dogs, some as Search and Rescue dogs, some as show, obedience, or agility dogs, but they all more than earn their keep as beloved family dogs. Nonetheless, this energetic and intelligent breed is not for everyone. This book explores the nature of the Australian Shepherd, relating its historical function to its present behavior, with special attention to the type of household in which it may (or may not) flourish. It's not been a history without controversy, and that controversy continues to guide the breed's future today. The most up-to-date advances in behavior, training, nutrition, and medical conditions (especially hereditary problems in the breed) are incorporated in this book as they relate to the Aussie. Special attention is given to training the Aussie to herd, and all of the herding, obedience, conformation, agility competitions available. Chock full of gorgeous color photos showing Aussies at work, play, or just looking breathtaking, you might be tempted to keep this book out of the reach of curious Aussies...but it is an Owner's Manual, and it's meant to be referred to over and over. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Format: Paperback
A general book for 1st time Ausie owners. Would have liked more info on character, eg are they very demanding or easy to live with. I would like to know how to keep an Ausie occupied and fulfilled when kept as a pet with limited or no access to training clubs or sheep. Would have liked more ideas for HOME ACTIVITIES and training TECHNIQUES to accommodate their intelligence and energy, and less on general health and sickness, which can be obtained from most dog books. As it is I am still not quite sure if an Ausie would make a good pet/family dog.

Excellent informative book. Tells you exactly how it will be owning an Aussie, (hard work) but very rewarding.

HASH(0x8a4ea1f8) out of 5 stars WONDERFUL! 7 Jan. 2006
By Leslie A. Harris - Published on
Format: Paperback
This book as LOTS of info on the Aussie like health/nutrition, basic training, history, behavior... well, like the title says! It has a neat chapter on the different activities you can do with your Aussies like different competitions. Another whole chapter on training for working and a very informative chapter on service training.

This would be a great little book to check out the breed to make sure you want an Aussie in the first place. Also, if you just adopted a puppy or adult and need some quick good info before you go off to buy that $45 Aussie book :)

It's easy reading for adults AND kids!

HASH(0x8a4ea24c) out of 5 stars Not quite was I was hoping for 5 Oct. 2009

Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I recently adopted a miniature Australian shepherd and purchased this book as an inexpensive way to add breed-specific information to my library. However, my dog was already five years old when I adopted her, and I really felt that this book was more geared towards customers who are adopting purebred puppies. There is limited information about the habits and personality of the breed, and although the health information was okay, I don't feel it was worth purchasing this book for that information alone. And it doesn't contain any helpful information about the miniature version of the breed.

Still, for the price, it has some useful and interesting information, and I did learn a couple of things. I doubt I will reference it often but I don't mind having it in my collection. However, if I were to only pick one book about this breed, I would definitely select something more comprehensive.

If you are getting a purebred puppy, though, I would definitely recommend this as a good starting point. I still wouldn't consider it to be very comprehensive, but it will give you some good pointers on what traits to look for, what to avoid, and how to care for your new puppy.

HASH(0x90dfe81c) out of 5 stars Most Comprehensive 31 Dec. 2001
By Tom McKiernan - Published on
Format: Paperback
This book is well worth reading and is truly breed specific, unlike a few of the other books available which are merely generic puppy pamphlets with a few specific breed pictures thrown in. Worse yet, they dedicate much of the space to filler material such as thinly cloaked advertisements for certain dog products. This book keeps clear from all of this and is 100% pure beef!! I wouldn't feed my pup filler material;why should you pay for and read "sawdust"?

I've bought several Aussie books and this one is definately the quickest and most efficient read. For the price, I'd say its the best one available. It's written so everyone can understand and easily find what they're looking for
