I bought this as a result of reading the good reviews above after having been very disappointed with a competitor's product at twice the price.
Installed it on a Thinkpad laptop (1.8GHz)running XP with SP3 which went smoothly. However, when I tried to fire up the software I had a message "Install DirectX 9.0 or Higher" which I did. Still got the same messsage after installation (how annoying was that) so I emailed the support line. They responded quickly, and were very helpful.
Eventually, the problem turned out to be in the registry - although DirectX 9.0 had installed, the registry entry had not been rewritten (possibly a Microsoft or IBM bug).
After using Regedit to alter the entry, the TotalMedia software fired up successfully.
Using my rooftop aerial, all the stations autotuned correctly; software works really well, simple GUI, very versatile (does much more than just TV/Radio); I haven't yet tried the recording facility, but I expect all facilities to work as well as the basic functions.
For a budget price, this works "straight out of the box" if you have DirectX 9.0 installed. Even includes a remote, unlike the more expensive one I had bought previously!
The playback is 5 stars, the reason that I am giving it 4 stars is that the supplied software is not that brilliant, yes it is functional but it seems to scramble all the channels into a random order and does not get the channel numbers right also many channel names seemed to be in Chinese. I use mine with windows media center which in my opinion is much better. I re-iterate though, for the quality of picture, playback and reliability on a roof top aerial this is a 5 star product which I would recommend to friends.
It is compatible to macs alright and works well. However the design is very poor especially the connection of the coaxial wit the main body. this is a really flimsy connection that took less than a week to snap. I fixed it temporarily only to snap again the next day. Aththis point the received went to the rubbish bin and it gave up the ghost. It beats me how the manufacturer allowed for this design flaw considering that their earlier model, DVB-T202 is a much sturdier make. Anyway, the loss was not great however I won't be buying a replacement any soon!
Review update 06/02/14. I actually bought a replacement as after a brief research I was unable to find anything near the same range to work for a mac. This time however I come up with a plan! I encased the tuner together with the coaxial inside a polythene sleeve, reinforced with urethane resin. In other words I converted the whole system to a solid flash drive looking dongle that it is virtually indestructible. I have uploaded an image on the product description.
Nonetheless if you cannot damageproof the tuner things twice before you buy!
The supplied ArcSoft software is a few generations behind today's latest ArcSoft software. It also gave other facilities that I had no need for e.g. Pictures and Music handling. Sadly the TV facilities were not really usable. The software did not find all the available stations (129), finding only 77. There seemed to be no way of manually finding the missing ones! The signal coming to the tuner is from a high powered roof top aerial and distribution system which feeds other TVs and rooms. This was NOT due to a weak signal! Another annoying bug was that the EPG was flooded with Chinese characters making reading or scheduling impossible. Despite deep Google searches of August web-site and ArcSoft, there was no solution out there. So I abandoned the in-the-box software.
I tried a trial of DVB Viewer Pro software which immediately found all the 129 stations (TV,data and radio) available in my area. The EPG was fully populated for 8 days and scheduling was a dream. I bought the full version for £13 and can now use the August tuner for everything I need. The picture quality etc is excellent, as one would expect from a HD tuner.
The August hardware works well and deserves 5 stars but giving the poor ArcSoft TotalMedia software with it is a poor move.So overall I award 4 stars. The hardware would work well with WMC, as others have said. But I have reserved WMC for my satellite tuners. DVB Viewer Pro shows that this diminutive tuner can work well and the tuner's low price represents a bargain.
