As I'd owned Audio Technica headphones in the past I'd seen these and were very desirable but also very, very expensive and it was also impossible to find a dealer who actually stocked them. However, these suddenly were available at a more reasonable £265 or so. I decided to give them a punt.
These were supplied from a German retailer and were a little bit slower arriving than usual. On arrival the packaging was a little Krypton factor but I was able to retreive them without too much problem.
The first thing you notice about them is the size. These cans are BIG and you are not exactly going to blend into the background with these. However they are also very lightweight, considerably more so than my hallowed Grado SR325e. Placing them on my head also revealed the fact there are for me exceptionally comfortable. So despite the prominence they're just right. They're also exceptionally well made those 'black cherry' wooden housing really are wood despite the fact they look arificial. Everything about them oozes quality with a capital Q.
All well and good but what about the sound?
In a word EXCEPTIONAL.
These are literally fresh out the box as I write so some running in may improve things even furthur.
As a closed back design I didn't expect them to be as revealing as my Grado SR325es but I've been very surprised. These headphones produce an exceptionally good presentation with very good separation of notes and instruments. The whole presentation is very revealing and bass is AMAZING. Not head-crunching but better than my Grados and perfectly in balance with the rest of the presentation.
Well Audio Technica really are a bit stingy not supplying a full size to mini jack converter. Fortunately I have one over from my older Grado SR325is and will be a compulsory purchase for anybody wanting to use with a phone/MP3 player. And also there's no case of any description. Those wooden housings need to be protected so I now need to acquire a case. Headphones of this nature will be below their best limited just to 128kbs MP3 files. So the source has to be up to scratch. If you're using a phone you need to be ripping at least FLAC/Apple lossless and better still Hi Res then put through some Headphone amplifier/DAC combination such as a Creative Soundblaster E5 as an absolute minimum. A regular headphone stage on a CD player for example will work fine but is just not of a high enough standard ( unless you own a Luxman who go to extraordinary lengths to put a decent headphone stage in their units) to bring out the best in these. These are sufficient to bring out the very best in £1000 headphone amps and/or DACs. Of course they won't be damaged by lesser sources, just not performing at their best.
Overall though I would strongly recommend these headphones. Provided the aforementioned are taken into account they are utterly outstanding.
If you want a fantastic pair of full size closed back headphones these ought to be top of your list.
Importantly, the sound quality is outstanding, though to get the best you need to power these through a dedicated headphone amp, I currently use the Fiio E09K desktop amp which does a very good job. The soundstage is very broad with good detailing and separation and overall richness of sound that is a pleasure to experience. I listen to all types of music genres on these, especially dance and all sound superb.
A very refined closed back audiophile grade set of headphones that I recommend for anyone looking for a step up in sound quality from basic to mid range headphones.
Only beefs - the wood is so highly polished it looks a bit plasticky, and the arrangement for fitting to yor head is effective but a bit Heath Robinsonish.
Good cans, though...
