This is my second negative scanner, the first one (Veho VFS-008 Smartfix Scan to SD Stand Alone Slide and Negative Scanner) worked fine, but I quickly realised that the effort in scanning in a bunch of old photos is in the loading them into the carousel. If you're going to go to all that effort you might as well scan them in at the highest resolution possible. Therefore, I sold the Veho bought the Ion and haven't looked back. The device is very simple to use, just load the negative and slide through the machine clicking the button. Then use the SD card to transfer to your computer.

Given that the negatives are 15+ years old, I've been generally impressed by the quality. Sure, some are a bit, faded or off colour but this is almost certainly the negative, not the scanner. For the odd spot to retouch, and to change the colour tone to make it richer, I find that Google's free Picasa software does a great job. Very quick and easy to use and makes it all very straightforward.

At long last a slide scanner that actually produces worthwhile results. I have bought several before, one costing over £250, and none of them were up to the job.

I wasn't very impressed with this scanner, for three reasons:
1. Dirt and dust get inside the machine very easily but are incredibly difficult to get out, leaving spots on all your images.
2. The slide stacker would not work for me, the slides sticking in the stack, so I had to press each one down before it could be slid into the scanner. Also, a number of the older slides in thicker mounts would not fit at all and I had to remove each one from its frame and use the negative holder.
3. This is my main complaint - the images are heavily cropped. The image on the viewer showed the cropping, but I hoped the image being saved to the memory card was the entire picture. Sadly, when I loaded them on my computer it was apparent that this was not the case.

I was very disappointed. I know this is not the most expensive scanner out there, but neither is it the cheapest.

Excellent item. Easy to use.
Provided your slides are of good quality to start with
you will get excellent results.
I've converted lots of slides from the 1970's & 80's that were originally
taken on a Pentax Spotmatic & the results are fantastic.
Highly recommended!

Bought August 2014, and have just finished scanning my slide collection, some 1500 slides. Chose this device due to speed of scanning. Originally tried my flat-bed scanner which has an adapter to scan 4 slides at once. Quality ok but so slow, life is too short! I then bought a cheap Ion scanner, about £40, but photo quality was poor. So returned it and bought the £99 Ion Film to SD Plus. This can scan 35mm slides or negatives. It is fast to use, I can scan a 36 pack of slides in 10 minutes. I then spend some time editing and improving them with basic photo-edit software on my Mac. Quality is better than the flat-bed, not pro standard but quite acceptable. It gives resolution of c. 4400x3000 pixels, which is more than HD standard. Photos look fine on a 50 inch HDTV screen, which is fine for my needs (in other words replacing the old projector and screen). There are more high-quality dedicated slide-scanners out there but they too are slow to use and involve software complexities, based on what I have read.
With this, you scan direct on to an SD card, so no need to be plugged into the computer while scanning, no software required. NB. This 'scanner' is really a camera, it takes a photo of the slide rather than scanning as the flat-bed does, hence the speed. You can vary the exposure by plus/minus 2 f-stops, like on a proper camera. This is useful as the device tends to over-expose slightly and bright scenes can be burned out in the highlights. I tended to under-expose by 0.5 to 1 stop. With practice I soon got to judge the best exposure depending on the image brightness. If in doubt, I would take 2 or 3 different exposures and choose the best once loaded on to the PC. Scanning is so quick yu can do this with no problem. I found I could scan and edit a whole holiday's worth of slides in, say, 2-3 hours. Overall, a good buy.

This is good value for the money but I have had a couple of problems. I bought it to scan old slides and the gadget to put slides through the scanner has a tiny lever that sticks out with which you push the slides through. This is VERY FRAGILE. The first one I received the little lever snapped off as I unpacked it. To be fair I returned it and got a replacement immediately which was good but I have had to be very careful in using it since. The other issue has been that dust and hairs build up very quickly on the lens and I scanned lots of slides before realising this when I put them on the computer and they were marked with black spots. There is a small spatula to clean the lens but this is not mentioned in the instructions. I found out about it from another review. I have scanned them again cleaning the lens every couple of slides but the results still aren't perfect. It seems that once the dust is there it's very difficult to get rid of it..

I've had this for some time, and scanned nearly 1000 slides now. It's pretty fast and works well - you can adjust the scanner settings on each scan, but the default settings work pretty well.
Do try and make sure that all the slides being scanned in the feeder are all in the same style of mount, otherwise the feeder may not feed properly. The biggest problem I have had is keeping everything clean enough. Clean each slide carefully and periodically clean the background for the scanner using the supplied 'wiper' otherwise you'll get black marks on your scans.
If you're looking to scan lots of holiday slides that would otherwise be lost - I heartily recommend this as an easy way to make these snaps accessible.
