I am enjoying my Audible membership at the moment. However, one has to be a little canny to get full value. A price tag of £7.99 (cost of monthly membership = one credit) is not great value for a radio drama, say, lasting less than two hours. On the other hand, one credit can also get you a whole set of dramas: the Narnia Chronicles (all seven for one credit), eight Poirot dramas, the Barchester Chronicles; or David Suchet reading the whole Bible for two credits (about a hundred hours' listening...). While I can find good value material that I want at the cost of a single credit, I shall continue my membership, but I feel that at some stage I shall run out, and at that piont I shall probably cancel.

I love reading, but occasionally I love to listen to an audio book- like many others. But £7.99/month for a SINGLE audio book every 30 days does not appear to represent good value for money for this service especially when one considers the many many alternative entertainment options out there at very similar price.

Consider a rethink on this one amazon, especially given the great value offered by a prime subscription.

Very poor value for money. When you think an Apple Music membership (for example) costs £9.99 and you can listen to a catalogue of hundreds/thousands/millions of songs every month.... compared to this which is almost as expensive, but you can only listen to 1 book a month.

Yes, that's not a typo.

Just. One. Book. Each. Month.

For the last few weeks, the home screen of my Amazon account has been trying to seduce me with a fabulous free trial of Audiobooks. As a Prime customer, the offer is for three months’ free membership. I’m aware of the misery that it has caused some customers with confusing or misleading offers so I cautiously accepted the trial.

Happily, everything went well. I did indeed get a full three months’ membership for free and very quickly I was being invited to download an App for my Android phone and spend the current month’s single credit on an audible book off my choice. As a fan of the original Star Trek series I opted for ‘Shatnerverse’ – a whopping four-hour long odyssey in the inner musings of the William Shatner! Great fun.

As someone who has to endure regular, long car journeys as part of my job this is going to provide some much-needed distraction from the daily commute. So, I really like the concept of audible books and I think it's something I'm going to really enjoy.

But, (there’s always a but), the current pricing structure is bonkers. One credit, or in other words, one book of your choice per month for £7.95 is insane. I don’t know what Amazon were thinking. The biggest retailer of books on the planet should be able to secure a much better deal for their customers than this offering.

My first book lasts four hours, this is easily going to be listened to in about a week. What am I to do for the reminder of the month until I’m once again prompted (allowed) to select my next title? Whistle Dixie?

Verdict: The biggest books retailer on the planet is unable to provide a value for money service? Come on Amazon, get real! On the current pricing strategy, my advice to new customers is to sign up, grab your three free audio books (one per month) and then click the Cancel Membership button. This is offer is just dumb.

Everyone has their own measure of value or worth. How do you do yours?

I have been an Audible subscriber for almost 6 years now (yes before they were part of Amazon) and I have never had a problem. Over the years I have up and down graded my package between 1 and 2 credits. I think those of you moaning about the cost of the monthly subscription want something for nothing and are being terribly unreasonable.

OK £8.00 per month - A good book could (not always) but could knock you back between £6 and £12.
Now ask yourself How much is your time worth per Hour? Minimum wage in UK is about £7.20. An audio book is generally between 4 and 10hrs long. Therefore I see i'm getting value for my money as I can listen to a book whilst getting on with my day, Household chores, At the gym, Driving Going for a walk/ run just to name a few, these are things I cant do whilst reading a book. I also enjoy the narration listening to different accents. I once read a book and enjoyed it so much I also got a copy on Audio only to realise I had been pronouncing words and names incorrectly. Having someone read to you also sometimes give you a new view on a scene due to the way it was read.

I would also like to impress a few points.
There are some Audio books that are 20+hrs long and you are still getting for £8.00.
If you were to buy these in CD format you'd be paying around £20-£50 depending on the title. Then you need somewhere to store them not to mention the risk of scratches.
Now and then Audible run campaigns like 2for1 offers that gives even more value.

Customer service I have also found very helpful I had an occasion where I had a faulty download, they dealt with it in a very professional and timely manner and I was pleased with the resolution.
