Product description

Review

For imprinting on five to 10-year-old minds the fates of famous names such as the Minotaur and Midas, this audiobook cannot be bettered: Simon Russell Beale's gentle and musical voice enchants, then startles as he erupts into the rough-hewn shouts of sailors, the cackles of the Gorgons, and the bellow of Zeus. (Carol Mansur THE TELEGRAPH)

A great way to introduce young listeners to the myths of Greece. Simon Russell Beale's narration brings Odysseus, Hercules and all the rest to life. (i NEWSPAPER)

Book Description

We are just sending off for the third volume of these. Volumes one and two have been much enjoyed by my 6 year old granddaughter, who turns the cd player on every breakfast and tea time to hear more. They would be excellent for a car journey too, as they are enjoyable for adults and read by the excellent Simon Russell Beale. I hadn't heard many of these. Very educational, giving them a wealth of important as well as enjoyable cultural background for life. When they come across references to e.g. Zeus, Athene, Hermes, Prometheus, Tantalus, Sisyphus, the tasks of Heracles/Hercules, Medusa, they will understand. The stories are succinct and each is just a few minutes long - easy to listen to as little or as long as you want. They are linked by the theme of a storyteller, Atticus, travelling with his donkey, and the stories are told to link up with the places they visit. Frankly we are not all that much interested in the geography, just in the stories, and sometimes it puts things out of chronological order e.g Heracles' first task is told after some others because it happens in a geographically different place. But that's a small point. Stories to keep for future generations: they really are classic.

My son enjoys this but we all find it rather irritating as it gives yo the bare bones of each story and then moves on. Would be mmuch better to give a few stories in greater detail.

Put this in your car and your children won't scream for at least an hour and a half if you are on a long journey. It's imagination central!

Each story is read beautifully by Simon Russell Beale. Every part is short but wonderfully descriptive. Our car journeys have just become much easier!

My son was learning about Ancient Greece in school, this C.D. was a really good way of learning some of the Greek legends and myths. Very Good.

We listen to these quite a lot on car journeys. My 5 year old particularly loves them - they are quite gruesome!
