I have never encountered a story with giants that wasn't for five year olds and for good reason; giants aren't scary. Now Titans! I kneel at your feet Isayama Hajime because you made giants terrifying! The gory scenes and full on trauma of this manga is riveting! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and as soon as i have money i will definitely being buying the next volume!

When I first picked up this manga I was highly sceptical about it, first of all because of hype surrounding it. I tend to find that most of the popular manga nowadays aren't all they are capped up to be and are actually quite disappointing. The artwork also had me hesitant about reading it since is was like nothing I'd ever seen before in a shounen manga. But I decided to give it a go after hearing some friends talk about it. And it was the best decision I've ever made.

The story is absolutely fantastic. It's wonderfully played out, and you're constantly left wondering what will happen in the next chapter. The characters really come to life in this manga, as they each have their own unique personality, and I just love all the interaction with each other. Another thing I love about it is the fact that the main character isn't like your typical shounen protangonist at all, where he suddenly gets a power up during a fight and seemingly defeats all the villains. Eren, the main lead, gives it his all throughout the series, and yet most of the time the effort is futile and he has to experience the loss that comes along with it, usually in the form of a character death. Reading this manga is a very emotional experience, since you are so connected with each character from the start that it's a shock to watch them die after all they've been through.

While the art was disconcerting at first, and took me a long time to get used to, in my opinion it suits the manga very much. I can't imagine it any other way now that I've read the series. One thing to take into account it that it is quite scary and gorey, and may cause upset if you're not used to it.

I would highly recommend this manga to anyone interested in an action-adventure/shounen plot.

As a HUGE SnK(aka Attack on Titan) fan I wanted to read the manga after I finished watching the superb anime(that I can't recomend enogh!). The first volume of SnK starts of at a really good pace. Because I saw the anime first I needed to get used to the art style of the manga and didn't at first really like it(I think Eren looks a bit weird at some places - that's probably just because I'm used to how he looks in the anime), but after a while I really liked it. It suits the manga really well. The only downside to the manga is that I kind of miss the beautiful colors, music, and superb voice acting from the anime, but other than that I really enjoyed reading this. If you're a SnK fan and want to know what happens after the anime left off (and need to know as soon as possible because the wait of season two is killing me) then I can only recomend you to read the manga.

NOTE: If you want to read directly from where the anime lefts you need to start with volume 8, but if you want the full glory of the manga I think you should read all the volumes, but it's totally up to you.

Thanks for reading my review. I hope it was helpful :)

Before Attack on Titan, i'd never been that excited about anime- nevermind manga- and i must admit, i was late to watching it when it came out. But when i started, i marathoned through every episode in a matter of days, and then rewatched them all through showing the series off to friends. The anime is one of the best shows i've seen, great soundtrack, great pacing, great artwork, and a great story (almost 100% of the manga), but i digress. After i finished watching the series, i started reading the manga- as the next series hasn't even been scheduled yet. Like anyone new to manga, i was a bit scared that i wouldn't understand the medium, or would miss crucial plot details, but starting from the first book all the way to the most recent - the 10th (and up to 13, if you search online)it has been great. The story is great (lots of foreshadowing early on to secrets just being revealed), the artwork- despite this being the artist's first work- is quite good; and noticably improved through the series, and the characters, whilst seeming over the top at first, really do settle on you.
I'm not going to deny my bias, but rather, show is as evidence of how enthralling the story is, even to a first time manga reader. I'd definitely give the manga 10/10, and there's still more (a lot more, hopefully) to come

'Attack on Titan' is an incredibly popular manga series that was adapted into a 2013 anime and an upcoming Japanese live action film. The series is something of an action horror series with a relatively interesting plot once the series gets going. The series follows Eren Yeager whose life is turned upside-down when the monstrous Titans invade humanities final stronghold and force him, his adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman and their friend Armin Arlert to flee their homes. After joining the military, the three come face to face with the enemies of humanity once again.

This first volume of the series is a relatively good start to the series that does a good job of introducing the setting, as well as Misaka and Eren, leaving the rest of the characters to be properly introduced later. The artwork took me a little getting used to as it seems a little rough to me but it is still reasonable and the action scenes are drawn well, being mostly easy to follow. The translation of the series is done well with nothing seeming to awkward (although spelling Eren's surname as Yeager will take a little getting used to after seeing it as Jaeger in the anime version).

The volume also includes some additional information on the setting, a preview of the next volume and an interview with the author (which includes some spoilers).

This first volume is a relatively good start to the series and I would give it a solid four stars.
