I loved the idea of this book. A book just on foreshortened views was just what my life-drawing shelves needed but I was quite disappointed with the quality of the images. They are not printed very clearly and are very grey and lacking in contrast. I would also have liked to see some more natural poses but from interesting angles- from above say. Most of the images were of reclined poses, and a lot of the Mild Foreshortening poses had already been covered in other books.
However it did offer some images that were of use and if you don't have any figure reference books it would probably come in useful.

The quality of the photographs is so poor that some poses are not readable. Poses are not printed very clearly. Images are very grey and lacking in contrast. They are muddy, bad resolution and sometimes slightly out of focus, causes that In the natural non-shortened poses is very difficult to find existing foreshortening. Most models laying down on the ground in poses which are very unnatural, total lack of natural sitting poses shown from multiple angels with marked foreshortening. As a reference book for art student, like myself practicing art of figure drawing I found this book is not very useful. It was very disappointing and expensive purchase.

There are many, many good photos of models in various positions involving foreshortening but no verbal instruction. If all you want are pictures to draw from, this is it, but if you need instruction, not so much.

Generally, this is an excellent book if you do not have access to live models. Specifically, it is an excellent book to study foreshortening of the human figure. Some of the poses are hard to hold for a real model and this book fills that gap, allowing one to spend as much time as one wants drawing a particular pose. I would highly recommend this book for artists who have always had trouble with foreshortening. It allows the artist to see the model not so much as a human form, but a 'shape', (sometimes quite abstract) to be studied and drawn, thus 'freeing ' him from trying to make his drawing look 'real' and as a result ending up with some surprising results! The book is a very good drawing tool. The downside is, of course, that drawing from a real live model in one of those difficult poses most often captures the energy and vitality of the pose that drawing from a photograph does not. But this book is a great starting point.
