John Rogerson's Atlas of the Bible (my copy says nothing about `Cultural'!) contains three parts - `The Bible and its Literature', `The Bible as History' and `The Bible and Geography'. Although the last part constitutes approximately 80% of the whole, the first two sections are surprisingly useful and interesting.

The third, major part of the atlas details clearly and thoroughly the six north-south `strips' that make up Israel's amazingly varied geography and includes numerous, high quality Special Features like `Writing in the Ancient World' (p16) and `Biblical Warfare' (p92). There are also thirteen `Site Features' - like `Lachish' (p88) - which focus on the archaeology (often with a site map) of various famous biblical places. This atlas contains many high quality colour photographs and some of the clearest, most well defined biblical maps I've ever seen.

Rogerson divides Israel into ten areas (e.g. `The Shephelah', `The Hill Country of Judea', etc.) with a detailed 1: 250 000 scale map for each. One annoying exception here is `The Jerusalem Hills' map (p162) which is 1:100 000 and spans two pages (which means the pages join right through the centre). A couple of other maps - like `The Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea' are a much higher scale, 1:700 000 - but given the extended area, this is quite acceptable. Otherwise, if you need a good Bible Atlas, this is it. It even contains an excellent bibliography.

This is the bottom line: This atlas excels in every way. My copy cost a fortune some years ago (about £40, I think - but worth it) and I note that it's now out of print. If you can get a cheaper used copy, I warmly recommend it.

This book is only one in a series of books about ancient civilizations and cultures called "Facts on File " , which cover the Roman Empire, the Greek city-states, medieval Europe, ancient Egypt, ect. They are all very great volumes, heavily illustrated with maps, diagrams, and photographs of the personalities, people, places, and cultural/social aspects of the area & time being covered. The text is very thorough and informative, also. A definite valuable addition to any library on ancient times,I enjoyed it tremendously !!!!!!!!!
