I love live performances and this is one of the best. Nina Simone is special here and on top form, communicating with the audience in a way seldom heard these days. The concert room acoustic is small and suits listening to in ones own lounge perfectly. The disc is remastered by Carl Lampley and the performance is five star. So why one star? Be warned, the disc will not play on all CD players and if played on a computer it will attempt to change your computer files. I suspect this is due to the Copy Control Technology incorporated on the disc. There is also an audible electronic ping at the beginning of the CD. At a time when CD sales are falling for the big companies, EMI/Capital have really shot themselves in the foot here by issuing such invasive technology and expecting the public to pay for it. Don't miss out on the captivating performance though - just buy a different issue

In the intimate ambiance of The Village Gate, Nina Simone made pure magic with her voice and on the keyboard, one Manhattan evening back in 1961. She sang and played with a trio, which featured her favorite guitarist, Al Shackman. We are so fortunate that the moment was captured and recorded. This is by far my favorite collection of Ms. Simone's music.
I can't really categorize Nina's sound or her music and call her "just" a fabulous jazz vocalist. Although, she plays extraordinary jazz with her voice, as in "Just In Time." She has been often called a musical anomaly, because there is no one category for her work. She was trained as a classical pianist, and in cuts like "Bye Bye Blackbird," the complexity of her piano comes through loud and clear. Her folk songs, like the biting "House Of The Rising Sun," and "Zungo" an African work song, place her at the top of a long list of folk singers. Ms. Simone's gospel songs, i.e., "Children Go Where I Send You," can raise the roof and bring down the house, as she did at the Gate in '61. She is a protest singer, "Brown Baby," and an actress, capable of an extraordinary range of emotions.
Nina has the rare ability to dig into her material and bring unexpected meaning to familiar lyrics. She is eclectic with her taste and her repertoire. But whatever touches Nina, and whatever Nina touches, will reach you and evoke an emotional response. Her music is as fresh today, as it was 42 years ago, singing for that Manhattan audience. They could not have loved her more then, than we do now.

I first got turned on to this release from hearing 'Sinner Man' one of the bonus tracks on radio. A diverse Nina Simone collection showcased at two concerts in April 1961 at Greenwich village, New York's Bohemian quarter. Starting off with a cool Jazz standard 'Just In Time', beautifully delivered, then the set just seems to have got very eclectic even by Nina's standards. The Rodgers -Hart composition 'He Was Good To Me' follows, again a very tender version. Then everything goes off in different directions with a chilling version of 'House of the Rising Sun', suggesting that the original version was about a prostitute . More diverse offerings appear including the very introspective spiritual lament ' If He Changed My Name' , the uplifting Gospel number 'Children Go Where I Send You', the well known soul standard 'Brown Baby', ( a fore-runner of the more challenging civil rights/ Black consciousness numbers that would appear later in the 1960's, also covered by Diana Ross on the 'Touch Me in the Morning ' album.) The bonus tracks include the dynamic 'Sinner Man' already mentioned but also two quite lively Hebrew language numbers, rarely performed by Nina. Finally there is a very solemn 'You'll Never Walk Alone' which Nina plays as if it is a very formal composition, an important reminder that Nina originally wanted to be a classical keyboardist, but discovered that she was barred from this career. This release is an interesting and worthy collection, perhaps not the best place to start for someone wanting a collection of Nina's `hits' or an introduction to her live shows but heartily recommended for people well into her music.
