The film looks to have been copied from a poor VHS in 1.33:1 aspect ratio and panned and scanned so badly that faces and heads are cut off. Originally in Italian, the dubbing into English is not so good so that some speech is hard to understand. Some scenes look to have been chopped because the actual run time is only 86 minutes, not the 93 minutes quoted on the DVD cover. There are no extras.
Before Fernando Di Leo became one of the leading directors in the Poliziotteschi genre, making films such as Milano Calibro 9, Manhunt and Shoot First, Die Later. He made this sleazy and bloody Giallo after the success of Dario Argento's Bird with the Crystal Plummage.
Klaus Kinski gets the lead role as Dr Francis Clay a highly respected doctor who has fallen in love with Cheryl one of his patients. However she is married and due to leave the asylum within a week. Other cast members include, Margaret Lee as Cheryl, the beautiful Rosalba Neri as a sex addicted patient and John Karlsen as the strange looking Professor Osterman.
The murders themselves are quite violent, with people been killed with axes, scythe's (grass hook) and in one case a arrow shot from a crossbow through someone’s throat. Heads are severed and there is plenty of blood.
Fernando Di Leo's direction is average at best. He prefers to keep the camera lingering over the naked women and twice there seems to be two inserts of female masturbation, which I don't think were the actual actresses. For example Rosalba Neri has small scar on her lower abdomen which isn't visuable in the brief masturbation scene.
Yes the film maybe sleazy but the build up as to who the killer is, is handled quite well. We get brief glimpses of who the murder is but it is hard to tell exactly. At the start the suspects include a lesbian nurse who has fallen for a black patient, Klaus Kinski himself, Professor Osterman and possibly Cheryl.
The climax at the end is quite good which leads to the best scene in the entire film where the killer goes on a rampage in the asylum killing everyone they come across with a spiked ball and chain before been gunned down in impressive slow motion.
Silvano Spadaccino's score is average. The love theme isn't to bad but the dramatic music I found annoying after hearing repeated over and over.
Overall its not a great Giallo but worth seeing for fans of Fernando Di Leo.
GREAT DVD QUALITY
Whilst one can sympathise with the fiend's moral indignation at the girls wanton display of the singular vices and the establishment's less than vigorous attempts at curing them of their unfortunate affliction, he nonetheless remains a fiend. I believe the young ladies would benefit from nothing more harsh than the correctional discipline of a light spanking.
A murderer intrudes upon this less-than-idyllic scenario, wearing a hooded cloak at dead of night and muttering, grunting and breathing heavily while he roams the grounds and corridors. He is surprisingly good at coming across young, attractive female patients while they are (a) naked and (b) alone.
The source of his murderous weapons? A display of swords, daggers, spears and a crossbow which are tastefully arranged on the wall of the asylum lobby, next to a WORKING MODEL of an Iron Maiden. I mean you just wouldn't, would you? Weaponry to decorate the asylum walls? A good enough reason to incarcerate the interior designer, one can't help feeling.
