Its a good strong build and the sound quality is very good. A good all round sound and the built in sub-woofer works very well.
I am using it as a sound bar for my LED Tv. I can only connect it to the tv via the headphone socket (3.5mm jack). But if you have a relatively new laptop then the three wires will connect directly into the laptop. I have tried this and the sound is very good. The 5.1 emulator is very good.
The only annoying thing is the blue light around the volume which signifies that the speakers are on. It would have been better if there was a way to dim/turn off the light. This only is a problem is if you have them on in the dark, and when the light reflects off the Tv. This is a small issue and can be ignored. It does look very futuristic.
Also the speakers come with either rubber feet or metal feet, depending on where you want to put it. The rubber feet are better if you are placing it on top of media equipment and if you do not want to scratch it. The metal feet are better if you are having the speakers sitting on a desk. In my opinion the metal feet increase the height of the speakers too much, and for me, blocks the view of my TV (This issue will also be affected by the height of the TV stand so others may not have the same issue as me)
Overall. It is pricey, but the build and the sound quality are worth the price
So began the hunt for a decent speaker or speakers, leading me to the new word in my vocabulary "soundbar". What a magnificent creation to enable the TV companies to make you pay twice over For something. However, we are where we are, and my old TV had already been Freecycled, so I had to find something bearable at reasonable cost, or I would seriously be watching programmes with subtitles.
The problems being (a) 95% of soundbars are far too wide (from left to right) to fit into a smallish space (b) 95% of soundbars are far too expensive and high-tech for a small TV - you could easily spend twice the cost of the TV itself! (c) PC speakers get in the way of the screen (d) "laptop speakers" are generally battery-only, too quiet and poor sound.
Finally after one false start with a laptop speaker I plumped for the Asus Cine5. Price is bearable. It does have 5.1 facility in theory, but none of our equipment can decode it - however it does allow you just to plug in a stero output from the TV headphone out, which means you can control the volume from the TV remote. It is mains-powered. And it is the right size and shape. However what does it sound like? Well, it is not "hi-fi". But it is not "no-fi" - which is what the TV speakers are.
You should note that this is a soundbar for placing on a flat surface in front of your TV (it has two nice sets of legs - metal or rubber) - not for fixing to a wall under a wallmount TV. But that was what we needed.
So - RESULT. I would have given it five stars only if it were £20 cheaper (say without the 5.1 facility). Buy with confidence if you are looking for something to pop in front of your (smallish) LCD TV.
The Cine5 is actually a games speaker which assumes you have yellow/grey/green 2.5mm jack outputs available. To run it off L/R external speaker outlets on the TV, YOU NEED THE LOGITECH 5.1 GAMES ADAPTOR. Might as well buy it at the same time. It costs more than you might expect for such a small device but it changes the Asus Cine5 from an "also-ran" into "best of breed"
Small footprint; excellent price even with the Logitech cost; first-class sound for the price/size.
No remote; irritating blue light showing the system is "on"
Initially when you set it up you will only get STEREO and that is all. Even this was a vast improvement on the TV sound.
However it annoyed me that I could not get 5.1 surround. After investigating I found that you could get a "Logitech 5.1 game console adapter" and this would give you 5.1 surround. You cannot get this from in the UK. However you can get it easily on Ebay from the US.
Having ordered this for a few pounds and a few days later, I cannot believe the sound. The bass is excellent, and volume is louder than I will ever need. You can turn volume down really low too and it still gives you a rich sound with real depth to it, making your TV viewing experience a real joy! Does it give real 5.1 sound? Who knows? But when a phone rings in a movie, I always head to the bedroom on my left before I realise it's not my phone!
