Good for Home Cinema

I bought the Asus HD 5450 to use in a Home Cinema computer because I needed a low profile fan-less card with low power consumption and an HDMI output. Full HD playback is stutter free into an HDMI television and the whole computer including the HD 5450 take less than 100 watts from the mains. An excellent card for Home Cinema.

Not what I expected

Having a PC with an integrated ATi HD 4200 video chipset (Asus M4A785TD-V EVO motherboard: with a Phenom II 705e processor, 12GB RAM and Win7 Prof 64bit), I decided to upgrade somewhat. I eventually went for the Radeon HD 5450 partially because it was silent (having no fan cooler) and because I didn't need the latest whiz-bang video card for PC use (my use of the PC being comparatively pedestrian...). I was also under the impression that this card might allow for 3 screens to be run in tandem (ATi's so-called 'Eyefinity') which would have allowed me to expand my screen at a later date, although I wasn't able to confirm this. In addition, it was a low-profile version which I could re-use in a home theatre PC at a later date should I want to.

Arrived well packaged and as described. Installation took less than 15 minutes, with only another few minutes for the installation of the drivers. Previously Windows Experience Index had rated the graphics for Aero performance on my PC as 4.2 (which was the lowest score; but the gaming graphics score was 5.8), but with the new card installed the Aero score fell to 3.8, while the gaming graphics remained the same. Somewhat disappointed, I decided to remove the card and go back to the integrated video. On rechecking the Windows Experience Index the Aero score had now been reduced to 1 and gaming graphics score reduced to 5.5!

I'm not sure what happened there, and for all intents and purposes I have not experienced any deterioration in video function while using my PC: everything seems the same with the integrated video. I'm not sure if the original Windows Experience Index was incorrect (that it should have been 1 originally instead of 4.2) or that the Windows Experience Index doesn't adequately reflect some aspects of a PC. Or, if the Windows Experience Index is correct, then clearly this card didn't give me the hike in video performance I was expecting.

Either way, for the cost involved, I was not inconvenienced by the apparent lack of performance: I'll stick to the integrated video for the time being and recycle the video card into a future HTPC. However, I can't really recommend this card for someone who already has an integrated HD video solution; for those that have no on-board video, then this will certainly be useful, although better models may well surplant it in the meantime.

Decent cost effective bit of kit but slight issue.

Bought this to use my computer as a media center because my original card I used for gaming was loud since the fans blared away trying to cool the GPU. This solved the problem so my pc is almost perfectly silent.

The graphics and resolutions this puts out are brilliant for anything I require it to do, had no issues with it in terms of how it works generally.

However.... The one issue I'm having and I'm yet to work out why, is that when my pc turns on it sits and resets until there is a 'power good signal' before booting as normal and operating as it should. My PSU is fine and far more than adequate to power this card, it onl happens when this card is installed. So I can only assume its because one hardware can take time to get 'up to speed' with its correct operating power before the PSU sends the power good signal.

Other than this minor hiccup, it performs flawlessly.

Bought this product after upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 on my desktop (+24" inch monitor), I am not a gamer, just need a better graphics card. I think that this product was over-specced for both my needs and my power supply as it would not work at all in my machine therefore sent back.
