David Clark, Master Mariner and Admiralty Pilot, says This an ideal book for learning the art of astro navigation. It is the perfect book for navigation students, both professional and leisure orientated. --David Clark, Maritime Master
Jack Case is a retired naval officer and experienced navigator who became a teacher when he left the sea. He taught navigation not only to sailors but also to students of mathematics and geography and was able to demonstrate the important links between these subjects. Over many years, he developed the art of teaching navigation in an interesting way so that it could be understood by students of all ages. Many of the author's adult students, including small boat owners and yachtsmen, expressed the need for an easily read and un-complicated book to help them to understand astro navigation. Hence the reason for writing this book.

This is an excellent publication for revising one's knowledge of navigation. However, I think it would be an advantage if a days work was also included such as, Run from previous fix to give DR for the morning observation, the application of the intercept to the assumed position, then the run to give a DR for the mer pass sight and the resulting Latitude and Longitude. I also noted that none of the intercepts seem to have been applied so that methods od doing so could be checked against the examples given.

In the very first chapter this book managed to do what nothing else had done before: make me fundamentally understand how astro navigation works. With that understanding, the rest is detail. Important detail, but without the understanding the rest is confusion.

Excellent source of information. Easy to follow, with excellent explanations, and practical examples to help understand the concepts of navigation by the stars. I bought this book as a mental exercise and I am delighted with the result, Jack Case is an excellent teacher, and I strongly recommend this book which can be purchased at a reasonable price.

Helpful whilst I'm currently studying for my NC in Nautical Science. Backs up the classroom based learning I'm getting and helps me to make sure I understand the subject. Easy to read and understand. Good explanations and diagrams to help you get what it's trying to say.

I enjoyed this book very much. I started reading this book but put it down until I had read his supplementary book "Applying Mathematics to Astro Navigation." After I read that book, I was much better able to consume this book Both books are wonderful!
