Product description
Product Description
The A&norma sets the standard of Hi-Fi audio for novice listeners. The SR15 is the first model in the A&norma line and is the beginning point of the Hi-Fi Audio experience, allowing you to enjoy the philosophy and technologies of Astell&Kern. The A&Norma SR15 uses two audio DAC chips for a Dual-DAC setup which offer greater presence compared to the inferior DAC chips designed for use in mobile devices. This device has adopted the MasterHIFI class DAC CS43198 for the first time in a portable system which means it’s capable of bringing you even closer to the original sound without distortion when it’s matched with the analogue amp design of Astell&Kern. The A&norma also supports native DSD bit-to-bit and gets one step closer to the Hi-Fi system. It’s also designed to remove distractions from your audio, including noise, distortion and an unintuitive user interface, so you can just focus on getting lost in the music. Play any resolution of digital files bit-to-bit up to 24-bit/192kHz with the SR15. DSD is native up to 64MHz, whilst DSD 128 MHz is converted to PCM for playback. The A&norma SR15 also accommodates 32-bit audio, by downsampling via the SRC (Sample Rate Converter) method. If that’s not enough, equipped with MQA technology, the Astell&Kern A&norma SR15 plays back audio files with the same sound of the original master recording.

Closer to the Original PerformanceWith two audio DAC chips, the A&norma SR15 has a Dual-DAC setup. Known for their use in Home Hi-Fi systems, these chips offer greater presence, when compared to the inferior DAC chips designed for mobile devices. With the MasterHIFI class DAC, the CS43198, the SR15 brings even more liveliness and warmth of sound, without distortion. |
Hi-Fi Audio EvolutionCirrus Logic's only awards the MasterHIFI class to their chipsets that meet the highest audio performance standard. Astell&Kern believes that true Hi-Fi should sound as close as possible to the original performance, and the CS43198 is one of few DAC chipsets that is capable of bringing sound even closer to the original, when it's matched with the analogue amp design of Astell&Kern. |
Enhanced Audio Processing PowerA&norma is designed to remove distracting elements such as noise and distortion. With a Quad-core CPU, the SR15 gives even more processing power for digital music, and a faster, natural UI experience. The SR15 plays any resolution of digital files up to 24-bit/192 kHz, bit-for-bit. DSD is native up to 64 MHz and DSD 128 MHz is converted to PCM for playback. |

Intuitive UseThe A&norma has adopted the user interface of the A&ultima SP1000, famous for its intuitiveness and simplicity. The A&norma SR15 is designed to ensure a good grip and full screen visibility when held at any angle, or with either hand. |
USB AudioWith a USB connection, the A&norma SR15 can be used as a digital music storage device and/or pre-amp to output digital audio through USB. The A&norma SR15 transfers DSD in native format through DoP (DSD over PCM) and converts DSD to PCM for output for external USB Audio that do not support DoP. |
What Hi-Fi? Award*The renowned *What Hi-Fi? Awards names the Astell&Kern SR15 as the Best Portable Music Player 2018 Product of the Year, describing the hi-res music player as "an extremely appealing all-rounder". |

Update: I loved this player's audio capabilities for the few days I had it to test it but in the end it had to be returned. I simply could not justify the price-tag: Ui is very limited, screen is too small and I ended up browsing Tidal on my phone, adding music to my favorites to then go back to the SR15 to play the chosen albums. In addition Bluetooth range is limited to few meters at best, disappointing when compared to huge range my phone has. For me it's back to usb-dac+phone combo!
Just for info I use this player with Shure's SE846's and to make this review I'm just going to list the Pros and Cons.
Pros
.Build quality is excellent, this thing feels rigid and tough. I have already dropped it on concrete by accident and it survived.
.UI is really nice once you get the hang of it and is very fast and responsive.
.Button layout is great, there are two skip buttons and a pause button on the side so you can change tracks without constantly getting it out your pocket.
.True Line-Out so this little thing really packs a punch, especially when connected to an old hi-fi, really makes it sound like an up to date modern system.
.Sound quality is excellent after a good burn in, although when paired with the SE846's there isn't a great deal of bass, which is a shame because I'm a bit of a bass head, but can't knock it for overall clarity and detail. Seems it's hardwired to a more lower mid focused EQ.
Con's
.Sounds rubbish until you give it a good burn in. When I first had it the treble was so shrill I found it unlistenable and was ready to return it.
.NO GAPLESS PLAYBACK with Hi-Res format content. This to me would have been a deal breaker had I known before buying it. I really can't stand having audible gaps in music that was designed to flow together. It's fine with 16bit standard files, like you would make if you rip a CD, or normal MP3/FLAC's etc, but I'm guessing if you're looking at this sort of price point in the first place is because you want to hear Hi-Res stuff.
.No continuous playback, so when it's finished playing a folder, it will just stop playing anything, doesn't move on to the next. It could just be me, but I find this really irritating, having to keep getting it out my pocket to play the next folder.
.Battery life is absolute rubbish. Hi res content at a moderate volume you'll get about 8 hrs. My NWZ-A15 had about 20hrs (no exaggeration) even after owning it for years.
.Price I honestly can't justify.
.EQ is terrible, doesn't make any difference when listening through my SE846's
.The unit get very hot when in use, I've seen Astell & Kern give an excuse it's down to inadequate burn in, I've had mine for months, and it still gets very very hot.
.The design of the unit itself is not to everyone's taste.
.Slow as hell file transfer speeds, takes an absolute age just to rename a folder when its on the player.
.Protective cases for this thing are an absolute rip off.
.Heavy for a portable player.
So yeah, more cons than pros, I would heavily recommend checking the unit out before buying it, as it's not perfect, and for the price it's really not a massive jump from a £100 Sony player. It definitely doesn't feel like a £400 jump in quality to me. So buyers be wary.
It's pretty steep in price and it is music player only - but that's why for me it excels. I've got a Sony xz premium phone, which is pretty good in its own right and an ipod classic 128gb with FLAC recordings.
With my B&W p5's the sr15 sounds rich and detailed with punchy bass that isn't over the top. With good recordings I'm hearing much more detail, but more importantly its much more musical - I'm loving listening to music on it.
What really surprised me was how much better it sounds than the ipod as the source for my pioneer head unit in my truck, over Bluetooth, the soundstage is massive.
Overall really pleased, although cse is overpriced
It has more than enough power to drive any headphones or earphones I have. Particularly the 2.5mm output. On 3/4 volume with the Denon earphones my eyeballs literally vibrate.
The quality of the music and the warmth and the detail and the comfort, or easiness on the ear, and the emotions of the music can be tuned for your own liking very easily with the equaliser. It really does make a big difference. In the advanced equaliser setting you can tune the bandwidth frequency range affected by each equaliser frequency point, i.e. the frequency or bell shaped curve (y = √(2π) exp(-x2/2)). This fine tuning of how sharp and tall, or wide and flat the frequency curve makes a very noticeable difference too.
Or, you could just play your music with no EQ, or the preset EQ already done for you.
Whatever you choose to do it will sound simply wonderful.
And I found the battery life good. And I really like the interface or GUI or HMI.
The ease of changing volume is, well, easy.
In summary this is one brilliant music player that is just as good to use for a 'beginner' or an 'audiophile' or anyone in between.
