This really is a practical guide: and an excellent example of there being nothing more practical than a good theory.

I first discovered this book many years ago. What struck me then, and still does that the Backs make three categories for consideration. Aggression, non-aggression, and assertiveness. They define brilliantly what they mean by this, and why it is very helpful to consider three states and not just two. We still are habituated to think in binaries, black and white, fast and slow, and this can lead to stasis or circularity. By defining asssertiveness as neither aggression or non-aggression the Backs make progress possible. They offer a life-enhancing way forward in an aspect of life so often doomed to the negative. I find the distinction useful on a daily basis. Useful not only in clarification but in offering ways of moving forward. In my experience this is far more than a book about work situations. I find it insightful sooner or later in just about very aspect of my life. Useful guidelines in our day to day encounters can only really be effective if they can be reduced to rules of thumb. This book can offer that. I don't mean it is simple, or for beginners, I mean it is brilliant. It is a slim book,150 pages, no padding, no obfuscation, or mystification: clear and to the point. It punches above its weight. It solves problems that beset us daily.
