I was hooked from the first page and as Andrew had tweeted about doing the screenplay for Assassin's Run, I was already mentally casting the characters in my head!
Years ago, I read the book The Journeyman Tailor by Gerald Seymour and it has been a book that stuck in my mind. Although Andrew's book is very different, it is based in Northern Ireland at the time when the troubles were high and at their worst. Andrew does not fluff around the corners in this book, and if it is happy ever after you are looking for, then this is not the book you are looking for.
It packs a few punches, some delivered with shocking brutality with absolute no regard for life or soul. Sadly, this was how it was at those times.
I was a bit concerned as I started the book at the age of the main character and wasn't sure how it would work, but as I read on it definitely became believable, the character became believable and the storyline became believable. I enjoyed Andrew's style of writing and looking forward to continuing with the rest of series and cannot wait for the screenplay & who will be cast as the characters!
Andrew has created a number of authentic characters within a fast- moving plot and packed in plenty of twist and turns. Without giving any spoilers, there are several occasions where I was genuinely shocked as to what happened to some of the characters. Always a good sign of a commendable thriller whereby you do not see something coming!
If I have any slightly adverse comment though, I must confess that I had to recheck the age of the main character as he is a very resilient young man! Not a criticism in any shape or form, just something that resonated with me.
Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and, at times, felt like I was reading an early Gerald Seymour as I thought it was that good. I can highly recommend it therefore and look forward to reading more of the series.
Andrew has created a rich world with characters that lift on the page, immersing the reader in the cut throat world of the IRA and the young Michael, who is thrust into this world of espionage and has to think on his feet to survive. I was genuinely hooked right from the start, and I can't wait to read more of Michael's adventures!
