Formula D is a high stakes Formula One type racing game where the players race simulated cars with the hope of crossing the finish line first. This is a re-release of Formula De with several changes from the original format. Whilst old tracks can be used with the updated Formula D rules, the new game features boards that have an F1 track and a Street Track on the other side. These street tracks each have a novel inclusion or two to add greater theme - The game mechanisms are a simple race, get to the finish line first! However, players have to use a significant amount of planning, and rely on quite a bit of luck. Each player manages when to shift gears, with each gear providing a different speed. (For example, 4th gear is a die that rolls random numbers from 7 to 12 for spaces moved.) Each turn, players may move up one gear, stay in that gear, or move down gears. This forces players to match possible rolls with the optimum distance for that turn, and hopefully plan ahead. However, speed is not the only issue! Corners have a "stop" rule that requires players to stop once, twice, or three times on that corner in consecutive turns or face a penalty. This creates an effective speed limit to the corners. Of course, things do not always go as planned! Players take penalties if they miss their roll, bump into another car, are blocked by other cars, have to brake heavily, or have to downshift several gears. These are taken off of a car's attributes (Tire health, Brake wear, Transmission Gears, Body, engine, and Suspension). Losing the maximum in any of these categories will result in elimination, or a severe setback for that car. This requires that players manage their car's health, plan for their best path, and have good luck on their rolls. This high amount of luck gives the game its family appeal, and lets weaker players have a chance at winning once in a while. However, the fun does not end with a single race! The rules include the ability to customize your cars, use a pre-generated character, add Slipstreaming (Drafting) rules and road debris, and change tire types to modify your distance rolls. There are also variations for a single lap race, or multiple laps with pit stops to repair some of your damage points. In addition, numerous expansion tracks can be purchased to vary the demands on each driver and car. Each track may also have weather effects (rain) that change car handling and die rolls due to skidding on wet track. This opens up the game for rally rules giving championship points over a number of races. Formula D adds a few items that are not in the original Formula De: There is the added excitement of illegal racing in the streets of big cities - anything goes! This adds custom cars, nitro acceleration, drifting in the curves, dirty tricks, gun battles, and trash on the road to add more variation. A basic change is the use of a "Dashboard" with movable pegs to manage your car's attributes instead of the paper forms from Formula De. There are also two sets of pre-painted cars; a Formula 1 set and the Street Race set of stock cars. The street cars come with "Character" profiles to give a bit of role-playing to the game. Finally, the old category of "Fuel" for the car has been renamed Transmission Wear to give a better thematic fit to the effect of multiple downshifting. The popularity of this game has given it a lot of expansions, some simplifications to the rules (See Formula De Mini), and a lot of "after market" parts. There are also fan expansions and tracks for the very dedicated player. In many ways, this has become a multiple game system.

Gear up for the race of your life!
Brilliant rays of sunlight reflect off the waters of the Mediterranean onto the glitzy casinos and gently bobbing yachts and speedboats of the Monaco marina. A sudden roar from the streets rises above the sound of the sea—the shouts of thousands of spectators, suddenly drowned by the bellow of high-octane engines making 18,000 revolutions per minute. In blur of colour, a pack of Formula 1 cars race down the Monaco speedway at over two-hundred miles per hour. Take your place in the pack and accelerate to victory in Formula D!
Formula D is a high-stakes game of speed and danger for two to ten racers. Every game is a race between you and the other drivers that begins as soon as you shift into first gear on the starting line. Every turn you must choose how fast you will push your car, while you navigate the corners and chicanes that could send you skidding into defeat. Whether you race along the beaches of Monaco in sleek Formula 1 cars or take your place in a dangerous, high-speed street race, you’ll need all your skill and luck to cross the finish line first in a game of Formula D.
- One double-sided game board with two circuits
- Twenty painted cars
- 70 plastic parts
- Seven dice
- Ten dashboards
- 60 minute playing time
- Age 8 +
- 2 to 10 players
Push the limits
A race in Formula D begins with each player’s car in position behind the starting line. Each player has a gear stick that slots into his dashboard, and by moving this gear stick at the beginning of your turn, you determine how fast you want your car to move. Every turn, you can shift up by one gear to increase your speed coming into a straightaway, you can shift down to slow your car for a corner, or you can remain in the same gear to maintain your relative speed. You do have the option to skip gears when you downshift, but skipping gears quickly wears out your gearbox.
Balance your car
Driving your car is only half of the race. Formula 1 drivers represent some of the most prestigious automobile manufacturers in the world and taking the time to optimise your car for speed, handling, and durability is crucial. Before the race, you have the option to build your own car, rather than simply using the industry standards. By choosing how many points you allocate to tyres, brakes, gearbox, body, engine, and handling, you can make your car run exactly how you want it to.
Hit the streets
you may crave a racing experience with fewer rules. On the reverse side of the Formula D board, you’ll find a new track allowing you to engage in road races through the heart of a city. Here, the personalities of the drivers dominate the performance. Each road race driver has a unique setup for his car and a unique special ability that can be used to gain the advantage.
Speed matters most!
From your car’s layout and construction to the race itself, Formula D puts you in the driver’s seat of a Formula 1 circuit or a wild street race. Your skill, your luck, your reflexes, and your car are all that you can rely on. Strap in and prepare for the race of a lifetime!

10 F1 cars racing around Monaco, 5 of us using 2 cars each meaning we can control a team (Shame the cars are not painted into formula one cars like Red Bull,Farrari, Mercedes etc i have seen some cars on the Formula D Board game geek site and they are done so well they almost look real especially when the cars are about the size of a pound coin)
Its not just throwing a dice and moving your car forward, you do have 7 dice and 6 of the dice represents the gears and how fast you go depending on the amount you throw on which dice you choose.
Anyway if you like Formula one and a good board game i recommend you buy this and if you want more tracks you get an extra 12 tracks which can be bought in 6 expansion pack giving you two tracks each...
Ive had a go at painting the cars myself and id give myself 7/10 but the gamegeek cars are well worth a look they are stunning which they painted themselves with really thin brushes and a powerful magnified glass i expect as mine on a stand was only £12.00 plus you gotta have steady fingers when painting which i dont have haha.
Its well worth 4-5 stars this board game i just hope that more tracks become available for the UK editions like Spa ,Montreal and Silverstone etc
Having said that it has excellent production values (tracks are particularly impressive) and it is a lot of fun to play.
Formula D is also the excitement of illegal racing in the streets of big cities - anything goes: custom cars, nitro acceleration, drifting in the curves, dirty tricks... The game mechanics stay the same, but use specific rules, cars and tracks.
You will also discover, in this new edition of Formula D, elements unseen up to now, such as painted race cars, dashboards, pilot profiles, and tracks... Very soon we'll unveil the new, high-tech elements which have been created in our ultra-secret lab.
Compatible with the old tracks/expansions of Formula Dé
You get simple rules and advanced rules - entirely separate, so you don't get them confused.
The rules are very well laid out, and easy to follow. I was successfully playing the basic game with my 10 yo daughter within 15 mins of opening the box.
Game play for the basic game is very straightforward. Advanced rules are a little more ornate, and make for a more cautious race since cars are less able to absorb damage / wear. I haven't tried some of the optional rules yet - weather, pit-stops, choice of tires, custom car builds; I like the fact that there are a number of different ways of playing the game.
A single-lap race will take 30-90 mins depending on number of players. Up to 10 can play.
I've played with 3,4 and 6 players so far - good in all cases. An excellent warm-up game for convinced board-game geeks and an excellent FUN game for less obsessive gamers too.
