Live adventurously, be creative, make a living
Adventurers cross deserts and row oceans, appearing to live the dream. Yet they also must pay the bills and carve out time to get away.
Are you trying to make a career doing what you love, daring to go freelance in a creative industry, growing an audience or curious about an unconventional career? What is it like to build a life from living adventurously?
Whether you are adventurous, creative or just curious, Ask an Adventurer answers your questions from behind the scenes, rather than the usual questions adventurers hear: there are no kit lists, practical expedition planning advice or daring deeds in these pages. Instead, Alastair tackles questions asked by readers on social media such as:
- How do you make a living?
- How do you make time for adventure?
- How do you stay motivated and focused?
- How do you deal with post-adventure blues?
- How do you deal with the dilemma of flying and travel?
- How has social media changed the way you tell stories?
- How do you become an adventurer?
- How much does an adventurer earn?
- How do you decide what you will or won’t do for money?
- How do you find sponsors?
- How do you get your work done?
- How can we make the world of adventure better?
- How do you get a book published?
- How do you get paid to give talks?
- How do you become a better speaker?
- How do you deal with emails?
- How do you start a podcast?
- How do you launch an email newsletter?
And more...

Alastair is honest about his shortcomings as an adventurer and where he feels he's made errors of judgement. He happily shares what's worked well for him too. He is generous with advice for budding or newly-fledged working adventurers. I particularly appreciated the bulleted summary and the 'no-fluff' approach to his answers, which tend to be straight to the point.
Alastair's response to balancing his wanderlust with impact on the planet have given me a lot of positive food for thought. I also appreciated his non-preachy response to why he became vegan and how he manages this 'full-time'. Having tried veganism myself in 2021, and caved after five months, this has refreshed my motivation to give it another go. Albeit with a new mindset.
Overall, I found the book to be honest, sharing creative offerings and practical guidance to living adventurously. It gives consideration throughout, prompting the reader to decide if they have what it takes to make a living from their exploits.
It's a simple, yet ingenious idea to catalogue all the responses to his FAQs in one book. The text was useful, enlightening and reads well in his voice (rather than sounding like a formal 'how-to' guide). Not a criticism but an inspired afterthought: an index of topics covered in the Q&As world be super useful for readers dipping in and out.
I'll definitely be coming back to read Ask An Adventurer for a second time. This time it will be with a notebook and pen beside me... after I've digested a few of Alastair's suggested reading list, that is!
This book, however, seems to be absolutely truthful. Relentlessly, shockingly so. Who greenlit this? Whoever the author is, he obviously needs a better PR team because, well, just imagine if all those famous outdoorsy adventurous types were as honest as this? Doesn't bear thinking about.
As a *reader*, of course, this is brilliant: a highly relatable, practical and inspiring template not just for pursuing professional adventuring, but also for bringing a bit of ambitious, adventurous creativity into any normal life. There are lots of great tips here for all sorts of readers, and lots of fascinating glimpses into the everyday lifestyle of someone doing extraordinary things.
But as a *branding exercise*, this is sheer lunacy.
There is, as far as I can tell, no face-saving embellishment at work here, no bigging-up of past achievements at the unavoidably pragmatic expense of the truth, no branding-friendly humblebragging, no oily tone that sounds like it's been re-edited by at least ten celebrity PR copywriters to remove anything that smacks of genuine sincerity. (ps. Despite that lack of sensible overediting, it's excellently readable. You'll enjoy reading it.)
If you're looking for great insights and takeaway advice you can use to craft a more adventurous life for yourself, sure, it's 5 stars. If that's what you're after, it'll deliver.
But otherwise, what a *rash* thing this book is. Imagine the state the online (and offline) world would be in if everyone with a significant audience was completely candid and forthright. The mind absolutely boggles.
This writer is one to watch in future, if only in fascinated horror at what they'll do next.
Ask An Adventurer is a fantastic book that details every aspect of being a 'working adventurer'. It is practical and most of all honest. The adventures, the trips away are the 'easy' part. The return to normal life and the subsequent marketing, promotion, book and blog writing, etc etc is time consuming and needs dedication and application.
I won't become a working adventurer. I'm 53 have a family. But in my own creative life as a writer and being self employed, there are so many excellent ideas in this superb book I can and will employ in my own life.
Life is an adventure and we should enjoy it as such. Alastair Humphreys has shown how it is possible to live and work adventurously and how with dedication and hard work you can live a successful life on your own terms.

Ask An Adventurer reads like you are sitting having a coffee or a beer with him, with you posing the questions. Witty, humble and thought-provoking responses are a joy to ponder over.
A must-read for anyone in a start-of-career or mid-life or I don't-want-to-retire-yet crisis.
Lots of insights, clear information, and a lot of ideas that might benefit any freelance creative worker.
Also, a lot of fun.
Highly recommended.
In this book he lays it all out, that is, how to build a life as a modern day adventurer including how to make a living, how to manage time, and how he engages with social media.
His writing is always engaging and honest, and for me, the insights within this book are applicable to any number of creative careers.
So a book, not just for adventurers, but for musicians, artists, and the like, too.
What I really like about the book is it fits my pace of reading. The subject matter makes it really easy to pick back up again after a brief break. The book reads like a mix of a self-help guide, an adventure story and an autobiography all rolled into one package.
I enjoyed the typical dry English wit Humphreys brings to the pages of this book. He inspires when he recalls various times of his adventuring life. There are also some memorable quotes from him as well as from others that will inspire you, such as the title of this review of mine.
This was my second book on Kindle, and after finishing this book on a Kindle, I encourage you to read it in this format. Not only does it make for easy reading, but Humphreys also throws in some hyper links that you may find useful. This book works really well on the Kindle format, and I believe this is how Humphreys intended this book to be read.
