I was gifted a free copy of Ashalon in exchange for an honest review. There may be a few minor spoilers in the first two paragraphs of my review.

Bobby Lee Townsend lives as any other ordinary child of earth, although he is far from it. Through a series of revelations, he comes to realize that he has the ability to control energy, and that he is far from an ordinary teen. After his family's deaths in a natural disaster, he uses his abilities to save others in similar peril, and that is just the beginning of Bobby Lee's (Ashalon's) amazing journey.

I liked Bobby Lee very much. He's a good kid, a normal kid, and whether intentional or not, there were some dryly humorous moments in the story when Bobby Lee reacts to some of the startling developments that comprise his destiny. They ring true. I also enjoyed the complexities of the civilization that produced Bobby Lee's special DNA; it is nicely drawn and the characters are real and very relatable. Even the villains in this book are understandable beings who have motives that, by their own reasoning, make sense. No one is purely evil for it's own sake, and that is refreshing.

The author has created an imaginative and attractive universe, and uses it to make some subtle and rational points about equal opportunity and merit and not judging people by their appearance. While this is a significant theme, it's integral to the story and not at all didactic.

The author describes Ashalon as YA/teen sci-fi and I think that category works, although in some ways I'd expect it to appeal even more to fantasy fans. The science is cursory, usually having to do with energy manipulation, but there is no real explanation as to how the beings generate the energy they use.
