Ascension of the Whyte is the first book in a series called The Afterland Chronicles and is an intriguing fantasy that will have you turning the pages. I'm a sucker for any book that starts with a map so I couldn't wait to see the places on the map described so I could picture them in my head.

The beginning of the book opens with Sara chatting to a friend as they leave school and ends with a sudden & horrific death. We're then transported to another dimension and the story really begins. We are introduced to a whole new way of life where, when you die, your soul ascends and becomes another person who may or may not have ascended many times before. Meet Rose, the first Whyte Ascendant for a thousand years, who with Ash, Auriel and Lee, make a very select cell who will save the world of Hydrarygrum if a prophecy written centuries before is to be believed.

I found it quite hard to believe that this was a debut novel. The writing was mostly extremely well written and each & every character had their own distinct voice. The magical system created was nothing short of amazing and quite frankly there were one or two potens (or abilities) that I would love to be real. The ability to read dozens of books in mere minutes would have come in very handy at school!

I became so immersed in the world Karen has created that I didn't even realize that it was starting to get light outside, I managed to read Ascension of the Whyte from start to finish and get to watch the sun come up! If you like your fantasy well thought out with an intriguing magic system, djinns who want to take over the world and characters who will become friends then this is the book for you.

I finally got around to downloading this book onto my kindle.....and I LOVED it.

Can this really be a first attempt at a novel by this author? Amazing debut! Wonderfully written, very descriptive which enables the reader to immerse themselves in the world of The Afterlands.

I can feel/sense where the author gets her influences and ideas from. The building blocks/foundations of her characters, the language, the customs etc. A very clever and reimagining from the likes of Harry Potter, His Dark Materials Trilogy, A Song of Ice and Fire etc. I believe I even detected a mix of the Sorting Hat from HP and the Mirror from Snow White and the Huntsman that creates "The Sooth"? How wonderful to be so creative... Absolutely brilliant and I am on tenterhooks to find out what happens next and whether the "misguided" El-on-nah survives! I really can't wait to dive in and immerse myself back into Rose's world.

Hurry up Karen Wrighton!

I'm a bit of a book snob. I am fussy and I hate books that are badly written. Many a time I've read a book and thought 'good story, bad writing' but this book is not one of them!

The story itself is gripping, it's interesting, the world it is set in is so well described that I can picture it exactly and you get a real feel for the places mentioned. The characters are quirky and interesting and whilst it is a fantasy you can still relate to all of the emotions and events.

The book flows well from page to page and chapter to chapter and the descriptions are detailed without being over-the-top.

It has been a while since I read something so quickly and I was sad when I realised I was at the end as I am desperate to know what happens next! I look forward to book two and finding out what happens to Rose and the Afterlands! This is a must-read book!

I thought I'd read this book over the summer in a tidbit fashion...ended up engrossed and finishing it off in a frantic weekend of book reading!

The author has created a great universe and has a set of interesting characters that I look forward to seeing develop over the series (there better be more books after this one! I need more!) From my limited experience of fantasy literature I thought I detected some influences from J.K.Rowling and Robert Jordan style fantasies.

Fast paced and fun. 4\5 and not 5\5 merely because I wanted more character development. I imagine future books will explore the relationships between the core 4 characters more, as well as the motivations of other characters, including the supporting 'evil' and 'good' characters.

Looking forward to the next installment!

For me this book was an escape to an amazing fantasy world - a gripping plot that got me hooked in the same way as those first few chapters of the Harry Potter series. The story is as magical as Harry Potter but with a very creative concept. The personalities of the main characters were very well thought out and you could see the relationships between Rose and her team develop throughout. I'm looking forward to the next instalment and can't wait the read about more exciting adventures for Rose and her team!
