The very simplest forces and a deceptively simple melodic thread with an unmistakable style. Anyone wanting the Spiegel im Spiegel title track has three rewards, the piece for violin & piano, viola & piano and cello & piano. Part explores the essential character of the instruments in the most poignant and moving way. For me, the Variationen zur Gesundung von Arinushka (piano solo) was the reason I bought the disk - again, the deceptive, simple, melodic line. Fur Alina (piano solo) is a small gem, composed earlier in Part's career, with the three part Mozart-Adagio for violin, cello and piano completing the disc. The playing is exemplary and too heart-rending for me listen to the disc all the way through on the first hearing. Unequivocally recommended!

This is Pärt perfect. Each piece beautifully played: measured and calm timing; no hesitation in synchronising between piano and string players. My current favourite is the cello version of Spiegel Im Spiegel, plus the gentle Alina. My wife is, as yet, hesitating to choose: "all too beautiful".

We look forward to dark winter evenings, lounging in front of the log-fire, with this CD as accompaniment.

The Arvo Part's minimalist pieces in the 'tintinnabuli style' (sound of bells) in the disc are among the most hauntingly beautiful works of the twentieth century while the rendition is stellar.

The compilation comprise three interpretations of the duet 'Spiegel im Spiegel' (mirror in mirror) for violin and piano (1978), for viola and piano (1978), and for cello and piano (1978);Variationen zur Gesundung von Arinuschka, for piano solo;Fur Alina, for piano solo (1976) (Alina is the composer's daughter);and Mozart-Adagio, for piano, violin and cello (1992).

In this uninterrupted string of gems, my personal favorite is Spiegel im Spiegel for which I shall confine the description to the elements comprising the music because the magic of the music itself rests in the experience of the listener.

The title Spiegel im Spiegel is a precise description of the piece. The part of the stringed instrument-violin, viola, cello-is itself already constructed as a mirror:the phrases it plays - each one successively adding one more part of the scale -always return, by steps or jumps, to the mirror axis, the central A. The piano mirrors the string part-volin, viola, cello-twice over with pure F-major triads, once at close range above it, but also with a layer of alternately higher and lower pitches recreating on a large scale the narrower tonal scale traversed by the string instrument-violin, viola, cello. The piano also confirms the melody notes of the string instrument-violin, viola, cello-with parallel thirds and octaves. All of the mirror images which allow three further voices to unfold from the core voice are stringently developed:not a single note is arbitrary.

I shall refrain from describing the music of the other pieces due to space limtations.

The disc is certainly among the very best in modern-twentieth century-classical music I have listened to in recent years.

This is a better CD than ECM's Alina, as it covers the same ground - i.e. Arvo's tintinnabuli chamber work - but offers a slightly fuller repertoire. In other words, unlike the ECM, this CD offers three different Spiegels (all largely similiar, it has to be admitted, but beautiful nonetheless, and does include all three versions - for violin, viola and cello, where the ECM only offered violin and cello); Alina in its original version (this is where the ECM disc is at it's best and most annoying in only offering great improvisations on this simplest and most beautiful of Arvo's early tintinnabuli works, but neglecting to include the original version); and the wonderful Variations for Arinuschka. My only slight gripe is that it doesn't include Hymn to a Great City, Arvo's only other - to date - tintinnabuli piano piece. Don't be put off by the SACD - this will work on normal CD players. And it's a wonderful CD - something ECM should be envious of. The music itself I cannot really speak about. If you know Arvo's work, you'll know what I mean. This is the sound of those mysterious quiet hours when an angel is said to be close by...

So few notes contain all the emotion you could wish for. Simply beautiful. To quote Mark Hollis "Before you play two notes learn how to play one note - and don't play one note unless you've got a reason to play it" Perhaps he learnt this from Arvo Part.

As with the other few 'classical' CDs I have, I took a chance on a budget label. And like discount German supermarkets occasionally can, it delivers something beyond that of its' big brand competition.

The first time I heard Spiegel im Spiegel was on the TV programme Casualty and it was perfect for that particular programme - I searched for it and once hearing the full piece I was hooked and it has become my favourite piece of classical music. It has got to be one of the most hauntingly beautiful and thought-provoking pieces of music ever made. It never ceases to make me shed a tear every time I hear it - it stops me in my tracks.
