The lamp glows brightly, and despite other reviews I've read, I think it throws the light across the entire surface evenly. I also didn't notice any hum from the light but perhaps if it's left on for hours and hours?
Anyway, I'd say this is invaluable for any artist or crafter, and whilst it might be a small investment for a student, it's durable and portable and I really wouldn't be without it.
A great buy; I'd definitely recommend it.
I do have a few quibbles, though they're more personal matters. I've found the 'hum' noise coming from the bulb (an energy saving one) a little monotonous at times, specially if I'm concentrating hard. I'm quite aware of sound, but perhaps others may not notice it as much - I sometimes just stick iTunes on my computer for some light background music.
With regards to the light, it's a very nice output but does not stretch to it's full brightness across the whole of the workspace, because the bulb is at the top. Whether this is a problem depends on your application, of course.
The only other thing, as mentioned before, is that the bevel/groove which holds any background paper in place is a bit too tight, even too slim to fit two pieces of paper under. I would have like to have seen some removable pegs on the top or bottom to keep things in place better.
For the price however, this is essentially a very good unit that only suffers from some logical flaws. With it's grooved under-side for ease of carrying, energy efficient bulb, and large spread, this is a whole deal better than the cheap knock-offs at half the price.
It's best used in a darkened room. The light will then penetrate even mirror card and dark coloured cards. I was very impressed.
It's far superior to my old light box which I bought for about £12 and was frankly a waste of money. This one is a lot sturdier and great quality. I'm very happy with it.
As someone who does a ridiculous amount of really quite rough sketches, I was sick of ruining the copier paper I'd doodled on when trying to neaten it up. The light box is a lot brighter than I was expecting, and let's you see the see the image underneath clearly enough to trace, but not so much that you can't see what you're drawing.
The plastic seems quite sturdy, and also makes it quite light (I was expecting it to be quite a pain to haul around,) and the top seems able to take some weight, so I can lean on it if I need to, without it breaking. The power cable doesn't unplug, which I find to be quite irritating, as it would make moving it around a lot simpler, though, it's not exactly a necessity.
The only bad things I could really point out are that while the plastic can take some weight, it does feel a little on the cheaper side, so I'm being rather wary about leaning on it too much. Also, while it doesn't heat up that much, mine has been making a strange smell once it's been on for a little while, though I'm putting this down to just the pick of the draw, as I'm not read about any others doing this.
Overall, a fantastic buy. I'd gladly recommend it to anyone looking for a cheap lightbox that gets the job done.
