From the Back Cover

Small in Size, Big in Style These artistic relief-carving designs from acclaimed artist Lora S. Irish allow carvers to create beautiful projects quickly. The small patterns enable easy experimentation with new techniques, tools, and supplies without a large investment of time or materials. So, use a different gouge, try a mew finish, or have a go at woodburning. With these small artistic designs, you can discover what you love- without worrying about wasted time and money. This collection of over 101 exquisite patterns enables crafters to try their hand at relief carving, wood burning, tole painting, and other visual crafts. While small in sixe, each design is large in style and perfect for adorning an endless variety of items- such as jewelry boxes, nameplates, house number plaques, wall hangings, trunks, tables, and much more. With landscapes, wildlife, sailing ships, fruit and flora, architectural scrolls, Celtic-inspired designs, and handsome corner motifs, there's a pattern inside for any project you can imagine. For carving beginners- follow along as Irish demonstrates the entire carving process from start to finish with the charming Fruit Crate Apple. Invaluable appendices cover all the tools and woods you'll need and how to achieve the appropriate levels of depth in a relief carving.

My husband LOVES this book by Lora Irish. He's been glued to it and I haven't really managed to get much out of him apart from "I should have bought this a long time ago". He's not a beginner, but certainly not advanced and cannot wait to get started.

He has also decided to buy a Scroll Saw (not essential), but this book has helped his to realise that such a tool can only help him in his hobby.

I had a quick "shiftie" through the book and I think the book would be great for other crafters, too, with the patterns etc.

RECOMMENDED by both of us for all crafters especially Woodcarvers, Pyrographers, Cardmakers

I think this author has a real dominance in this area, I come across a lot of her designs - perhaps not enough folk are publishing designs.
The designs are good but nothing special, just nice line drawings - each one having a shaded version next to it to give an idea of the end result. I'm pleased with this purchase.

I thought the designs were solely for woodcarvers as shown on the front cover and was somewhat misled; I should have read all the print on the front cover so I do accept responsibility. In my opinion most of the patterns were more suited for pyrography.
