Poor editing marred one of the early chapters where the same ideas are expressed in three consecutive paragraphs - but don't let this put you off the book. The true-life origins of the plot for one of the Hornblower novels can also be discovered in these pages.

The writing is fluent and engaging, and suggests an author with a breadth of knowledge of English culture of the period, and maritime culture in particular. One suspects he has read all of those Patrick O'Brien novels. But the learning is generally worn lightly, and the author permits his own personally to show through in a modest number of wry observations.
