A very neat little introduction to the relatively unknown Gentileschi. One of the series "Lives of the Artists". Nice colour plates. Useful reference section for further reading. Makes you wonder why this lady has been hidden for so long. Jones knows his stuff and writes well.
Would make a superb Birthday/Christmas present.........

Artemisia Gentileschi was the greatest female artist of the Baroque age and one of the most brilliant followers of the great Caravaggio.
As a young woman Artemisia was assaulted by her tutor, and then had to endure a seven-month-long trial during which she was brutally examined by the authorities. Gentileschi was shamed in a culture where honour was everything.
Despite this, she went on to become one of the most sought-after artists of the seventeenth century.
