Launching the 'Lives the Artists' seriesA highly readable short biographies of the most-popular artists, which focuses on their lives rather than their art. |
Artemisia Gentileschi was the first feminist artistSurviving assault and public humiliation to become one of the most celebrated artists of the Italian Baroque. |
Written by a Gentileschi expertRenowned Guardian newspaper art critic Jonathan Jones is the author of several books, including Sensations: The Story of British Art from Hogarth to Banksy, also published by Laurence King in 2019. |
A powerful personal visionLike Frida Kahlo, Louise Bourgeois or Tracey Emin, Gentileschi put her life into her art. |
Artemisia Gentileschi was the greatest female artist of the Baroque age and one of the most brilliant followers of the great Caravaggio.
As a young woman Artemisia was assaulted by her tutor, and then had to endure a seven-month-long trial during which she was brutally examined by the authorities. Gentileschi was shamed in a culture where honour was everything.
Despite this, she went on to become one of the most sought-after artists of the seventeenth century.
‘Lives of the Artists’ is a new series of brief artists biographies from Laurence King Publishing. The series takes as its inspiration Giorgio Vasari's five-hundred-year-old masterwork, updating it with modern takes on the lives of key artists past and present. Focusing on the life of the artist rather than examining their work, each book also includes key images illustrating the artist’s life.
