Format: Paperback
This book was originally published in New York City in 1888, written by Clarence Chatham Cook (1828-1900).

The purpose of this volume is a survey of the history of French painting from the classical period, in the introduction, to the days of the author.

The book is made of discrete biographies of many artists over 286 pages, interspersed with numerous monochrome engraving illustrations and plates. The biographies are of very variable length depending on the significance for the period of the artist discussed.

It is an interesting source to know about French painting in the 19th century, and also about an American point of view on the matter.
