Tomb Raider. Ah. I've always wanted to have a Tomb Raider artbook. Love the environments. This book is filled with wonderful concept art of the characters and environments. Surprising, or maybe not, about 80 percent of the book are on the environments.
Looking at the environment art, it reminded me instantly of Uncharted 2's artbook, except here it's much darker to suit the mood of the game. The colours are muted, the world is harsh, bleak, and the sun doesn't shine through much. There are art for the forests, villages, worn down buildings, monasteries and a bit on ship Endurance.
The art is great. You get a good sense of this exotic, mysterious and weather battered island. It really makes you wonder who lived there.
It's a wonderful companion artbook to the game. Highly recommended.
If you like this type of art, definitely check out The Art of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves also.
(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)
This art book is simply gorgeous, and quite large (11.7" x 8.6") too but unlike most of the other gaming / movie art books I have in my collection, Tomb Raider is in paperback format, but don't let that put you off thinking it's been cheaply put together. The 272 pages are full of beautiful conceptual art on the characters, enemies, environments and weapons in the game and all printed on high quality heavy art stock paper.
Most of the book is taken up with the beautiful art of the forests, villages, buildings and the monasteries with a description of the set up of the scene in the game plus comments from behind the scenes about how they went about putting it together.
The level of detail in this book is pretty in depth and coupled with the superb artwork, all gives you a sense of what it must be like on the mysterious island that Lara and her companions are shipwrecked upon in the game.
If you enjoyed the game, like I did, I can definitely recommend this art book if you want to revisit Lara Croft's adventures on the Japanese Island.
Due to the dark tone and setting of the game there isn't alot of colour to be had, dark hues of Grey, Blue, Green all used to create a foreboding ambience on an isolated savage island cut off from civilisation, detailed looks at underused one dimensional bit part characters plus Lara and all of her weapons, equipment etc.
Excellent book which provides an interesting in depth look at a detailed, wonderfully realised world with its own miniature eco-system.
the book portrays a rich world, with many distinct environments that work coherently together as different parts of the same island.
while the art illustrates the appearance of the game's environment it also conveys a lot of emotion, which (i believe) really helped with the design of the game's cinematic.
other than Lara and some of the villains, the characters are pretty plain, both in design and character, but I guess they're designed as much as their role requires.
item design is also a great feature as it shows several weapons, each with its own set of upgrades, which stay unique even as the weapon level rises.
the book is also filled with commentary that wraps the whole process together, and gets you to think of what is needed to succeed in creating such a unique look.
