The Art of Todd McFarlane is a visual autobiography of the comic artist, master himself. It's quite a book to behold.

It's a seriously inspiring book. You'll learn about the effort he put into drawing from his schooling days, to the getting his first job and then creating companies like Image Comics and McFarlane Toys. Besides that he has also included the many side projects he's involved in, such as creating music videos, concepts for animation and movie, video games and more.

This guy sent out 700 submission letters to comic editors and received hundreds of rejection letters, and collected all the critiques to improve himself. And he actually counted the number of submissions sent?! That's determination, and the quality of his work shows. This guy is the accumulation of talent plus hard work.

The artworks showcased are amazing. Very well reproduced, printed big. You'll see his early works, in pencils, ink and colours. The accompanying commentary provides insightful background to the work, and his career progression. He has worked for Marvel, DC Comics, so those works are included as well, as his many Spawn comic art. You'll read a lot about what goes on behind creating comic art.

This book is available in hardcover and paperback. At 400 pages thick, I'll recommend getting the hardcover but I've yet to see the binding on the paperback. The paperback is much better and may be a better bargain for the price though.

Highly recommended.

Love Todd's art from yesteryear? Get this. I did get mine with a corner dinged from amazon's handling BUT it did not detract from the interiors. This is a big book and cannot be missed by fans of McFarlane.

HASH(0x914665dc) out of 5 stars The Art Of Todd McFarlane 3 Jan. 2013

A must-have for McFarlane fans of all stripes! This book is very thorough and includes most of his best (and earliest) work. And the well-written biography really lets you in behind the scenes of what a lot of us took for granted. Obviously Todd McFarlane was amazing (no pun intended) and seemingly must have arrived at his ability and subsequent success by some type of dark, Faustian type of deal, right? But the man, and innovator, was fighting an up-hill battle most of the way, at nearly every step of his mythical path. It makes me thankful that he had the backbone and belief in himself to forge ahead and do things his own way. I shudder to think of a world in which Todd McFarlane had no artistic or "political" influence in the many fields that he conquered. And if you just want to bypass the reading and just look at the "pretty pictures," then I can't think of any better book to take your eyes for nine rounds.

Nobody who is involved in comics (either in the business or a fan) can deny that Todd McFarlane helped pump life in the comic business and helped pave the way for some of our favorite artists in the business to highlight their talents. He also took his talent to another level when he got into the action figure business. He gave all of us fans what we wanted when we dreamt of what action figures should be and how they should look. Todd McFarlane is definitely the total package and this book highlights all of it.

I'm a bit biased, since Todd McFarlane is my favorite comic book artist. The book does a good job going through all of his old art; I'm not sure how he has kept so much of it for so long. I guess the only downside is a lot of the art is stuff I have already seen before...but I still love it!
HASH(0x91704240) out of 5 stars Truly inspirational! 30 Dec. 2012

I got this book for christmas it came in the mal wrapped in a plastic, well protected strong book I can not worry about it being bent because of the nice hard cover. I love todd's art ever since I was in 6th grade and my eyes were on that dark character called spawn. Spawn has ben a major inspiration in my art work, making me drive to become a more successful artist, with todd as a major inspiration in my art and in my life. I read todd's spawn origins as well and he talks about small parts of his success, In The art of Todd McFarlane, He talks about how he started what was his drive and an how he kept going. The foreword is written by stan lee and it is so inspiring to read how he considers todd as one of the best writers and artists. Todd is truly inspirational, how we worked his way up from when he was 16 and until now he has his own comic book empire, "Image comics". I love hearing about this mans success as well as seeing his original pencil sketches and learning about his learning process. It is one thing to see a frank frazetta book but to see a timeline of progress is really moving and really gives me hope as a young artist. Todd mcfarlane isn't just an artist he's a creator of a toy company and his own comic book company, with tv series and a movie. If that isn't inspiration I don't know what is!
