The Art of Todd McFarlane is a visual autobiography of the comic artist, master himself. It's quite a book to behold.

It's a seriously inspiring book. You'll learn about the effort he put into drawing from his schooling days, to the getting his first job and then creating companies like Image Comics and McFarlane Toys. Besides that he has also included the many side projects he's involved in, such as creating music videos, concepts for animation and movie, video games and more.

This guy sent out 700 submission letters to comic editors and received hundreds of rejection letters, and collected all the critiques to improve himself. And he actually counted the number of submissions sent?! That's determination, and the quality of his work shows. This guy is the accumulation of talent plus hard work.

The artworks showcased are amazing. Very well reproduced, printed big. You'll see his early works, in pencils, ink and colours. The accompanying commentary provides insightful background to the work, and his career progression. He has worked for Marvel, DC Comics, so those works are included as well, as his many Spawn comic art. You'll read a lot about what goes on behind creating comic art.

This book is available in hardcover and paperback. At 400 pages thick, I'll recommend getting the hardcover but I've yet to see the binding on the paperback. The paperback is much better and may be a better bargain for the price though.

Highly recommended.

As soon as i picked this up i knew i was on to a winner, charting the rise of one of comic's genuine legends this book is a gem and contains everything you'd expect or want from such a book.
From early sketches and submissions to his first published work the art work is chock full of accompanying text and comments by mcfarlane making this more like an illustrated bio...
it shows how his art was indiscernable from most other artists of the time and you can see when the todd mcfarlane style started to come about.

the real good stuff kicks off at his tenure with marvel especially his meteoric rise to fame with his run on spider-man and this starts at roughly halfway through the book. the spawn section was the biggest draw for me and todd even acknowledges his partner in crime greg capullo and even includes some of his work!

the real surprise was the inclusion of the mcfarlane toys empire ,his videogames animated series and the movie even giving us a glimpse into an as yet unreleased second spawn animated series .

HASH(0x90271be8) out of 5 stars Great Book For A Comic Book Fan 12 Jun. 2013

If you know someone who enjoys reading comic books you can't go wrong with this book. It is my inspiration to keep drawing art pieces and maybe even a comic book in the future. There isn't much information on drawing tips, but if you enjoy reading and drawing comics, you should check this book out. Using this book for comic book poses can also be helpful for those who like to draw.
HASH(0x90273390) out of 5 stars The best art book I have ever bought or read. A true collection of an artist's work and the evolution of his craft. A must buy. 23 Mar. 2016
By Ryan P Bell - Published on Amazon.com

This book is a great collection of Todd's work over the years. It is such a great book that it made me really detest the Art of Greg Capullo book that I purchased later. Not because Greg is a bad artist, he is just as amazing as Todd is; but because that book lacked variety and was mostly Sam and Twitch paintings and failed to showcase his skillset and his evolution as an artist. This book though.... you get variety and you get that journey. From early drawings and comics of Spawn done by Todd at age 16, to the work he submitted to comic publishers when they would send him a script to tell a story in the hopes he would land a job, to landing work DC, Marvel, and of course culminating with founding Image Comics and his work on Spawn and beyond. You get pencils, inks, sketches, sequential art and much more. There is also commentary sprinkled throughout where Todd critiques his own work and gives some important life lessons. This book is both inspiring and educational. If you are an aspiring artist or one that just appreciates the work this guy has done of the years this book is a must have and the price is worth every penny as the page count is easily above 300 pages. What are you waiting for pick this thing up already!

HASH(0x902733fc) out of 5 stars Todd McFarlane was da man at one time... 8 Nov. 2014

I've always been a big fan of McFarlane's art. I wish he still drew comics on a regular basis. His Spawn comics are ok at best. When he quit drawing them on a regular basis, I lost interest. He just wants to sit on top of that Spawn mountain and rake it in. I guess I don't blame him. There are lots of big images. I've seen most of the art. Not a ton of rare stuff. I see some of the art in black and white. He's very proud of his inking. Some of Liefeld's stuff shows up because he inked it. I guess I'm in the minority but I like Liefeld's art. It's a very good art book.

HASH(0x902731a4) out of 5 stars If you love Todd Mcfarlane 11 April 2015

If you love Todd Mcfarlane, this is the definitive collection of his artwork. The timeline is great, starting from his older works and current. He is kind of a dick to one inker in the bio,but it's Todd so whatever. This is a must have for anyone. Btw, pick up ICONS with Jim Lee and Mark Silvestri. These are all excellent works.
