I really did not expect this book. From the description I thought it was going to be all science fiction, with portals to alternative dimentions and secretive government agencies. As such I was pretty thrown when it turned out to be fantasy and really clever fantasy at that. It follows Hazel Stanczak, a girl that has been set up to be The Chosen One but isn't prepared for it at all. While that's not unusual for fantasy the fact that she's unsuited for the task ahead of her precisely because of the manner that she was picked is. It adds a nice dynamic to everything. As does the fact that she's accompanied by versions of herself from mirror dimentions that weren't picked in the same way she was.
At it's heart this is a book about identity, what it means to be who you are, how to get to be who you want to be an if that journey is even possible. It's quiet and it's powerful and I have a lot of trouble articulating just what it says to me because even though it talks about saving the world it's at its heart very personal. I can heartily recommend it.
