About the Author
Hayao Miyazaki is one of Japan's most beloved animation directors. In September 2005 he was awarded the Venice International Film Festival's Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement, and his Studio Ghibli received the Festival's Osella Award for overall achievement in 2004. Miyazaki's films include Spirited Away, winner of the 2002 Academy Award® for Best Animated Feature Film, as well as Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro and Howl's Moving Castle, all of which have received great acclaim in the U.S. Miyazaki's other achievements include the highly regarded manga series Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, which is published in English by VIZ Media. Nausicaä, like many of the director's movies, is now available on DVD in the U.S.

I haven't seen the book yet, but Rosa was delighted with it. To quote her letter of thanks:
"The pictures inside the book have a beautiful colour pallet.I loved reading it and looking at the pictures. Thank you so, so much! It's one of the best birthday presents I've ever had. I love the way Hayao Miisazaki draws."
Can one say more than that?
Highly recommended for any fans of Hayao Miyazaki's work!
Although I've not had the pleasure of viewing the film, this book has wetted my appetite and I feel as though I know the film well now - not just the basic plot, but the energy and the ideas behind it. I now know the efforts behind creating the sea, and I use the word 'create' deliberately - the sea in Ponyo isn't just a mass of water, it is an entity with a soul and Hayao Mayazaki himself immersed himself in the project to utilise his incredible imagination in bringing it to life.
Animation is dismissed by many as a lower form of entertainment but this book will serve to educate those nay-sayers and assist them in realising that many anime features are incredible examples of art in their own right.
The book contains several interviews with key players from the film, including Katsuyo Kondo (Supervising Director) and Noboru Yoshida (Art Director) and of course there's a feature from the great man himself - Hayao Mayazaki. The most fantastic aspect of this book though are the illustrations, the images from the film are vivid and the concept art are beautiful sketches and watercolours.
There's also a full script of the film (in English!) at the end of the film, so you can feel free to act out the scenes yourself!
In a nutshell: A large book which isn't stuffed full of filler material - it's all good! If you've not seen the film then this book isn't going to spoil anything, it will probably enable you to appreciate the film even more as you'll already have a sense of the ideas behind what you're watching. If you have seen the film already then this serves to further develop not just the story, but whole concept of the film.
