Product Description

Review

Visually contemporary and stylishly designed ... a timely overview of the art world's involvement in politics. --E-International Relations

A must-have for any artist whose work is inherently rooted in politics. --Review

Anthony Downey's illustrated, themed analysis of political artworks from the past 15 years provides an accessible snapshot of the different ways in which artist are currently engaging with and responding to socioeconomic issues ... Downey's ability to contextualise a range of artistic approaches within such a pacey format makes this both a useful reference and an enjoyable read. --Art Review Asia

Downey's text is thoughtful and accessible, refraining from asserting his own political views on the art, and discussing its intentions and public response with clarity. --Running in Heels

If you, like many, are perplexed by the art world's insatiable preoccupation with the pressing issues of our times, and by the images of red-carpeted red-soled high-heeled art parties celebrating the artwork that addresses global unrest, poverty and conflict (fresh out of the comfort of London and New York studios), then Anthony Downey's `Art and Politics Now' will entertain your brain in a pleasantly refreshing manner. Though not directly addressing the issue of the meaningful vs. delusional, the book provides a brilliant and extremely helpful account of art from across the globe that engages with and addresses the political.
Does art have potential to 'speak truth to power' and reframe `le partage du sensible' in society, and in what way? How artists engage with political, what subjects are they most concerned with, and what tools do they choose in order to not just raise awareness and awaken, but to redefine and re-imagine what we understand by the term politics?
Anthony Downey, a brilliant academic and writer, unhappy with the state of affairs where the only type of art immediately recognized by general public as "political" is Banksy, set out to creating this accessible overview of contemporary art's complicated love affair with politics. He provides a concise yet insightful discussion of over 200 artworks, from Renzo Martens's Episode III to Wafaa Bilal's 3rdi, - that reads fast yet overwhelms when consumed in a short period of time like I did: sort of Leeloo's journey of learning history in few days and coming across excruciating pages of humans' cruelty and savagery.
