When I first started collecting classical records some 50 years ago, one of my first loves was Anda playing Mozart and for me those early experiences have never been surpassed and rarely equalled. This collection features no Mozart but includes Beethoven, Chopin, Schubert and Schumann; in every case the playing projects a bold lyrical simplicity which makes much modern playing sound soulless and overly technical. The remastering has performed miracles with the sound; only occasionally is one reminded that some of these recordings are nearly 70 years old. I am not a fan of honky-tonk-sounding pianos, however magisterial the player, but there is nothing to fear from here.

Here is playing by a true master of the piano, seemingly from another age. Anda had a fantastic technique and an aristocratic manner at the piano. He was also a very individual interpreter as can be heard from his performances of Beethoven and Schubert on these discs. However, as I found the playing, though uncoventional at times, shed new light on the works concerned, this did not worry me. After all, who wants to record a piece just like everyone else? And the playing is just sublime.
The Chopin and Liszt are both good but the highlight for me is Anda's playing of the Schumann works - two discs of it. Absolutely fabulous performances which are up there with the very best of the Schumann playing of the twentieth century. At just under a tenner these four discs represent amazing value. Worth it just for the Schumann discs alone. Pianophiles should not hesitate.

HASH(0x98888498) out of 5 stars Good survey of a great pianist's artistry. 26 Nov. 2009
By Abert - Published on Amazon.com
There are 4 CDs in the boxset.
Two full CDs are dedicated to the works of Schumann. The other two cover Beethoven, Schubert Chopin and some Liszt.
The liner notes aptly described Anda as a pristine Schumann interpretor.
While the posterior generations are well-acquainted with Anda's Mozart and Beethoven, his Chopin and Schumann are less well-known.
The Chopin Preludes come in their entirety in this set, and if you have already acquired your own taste in Chopin, it would not do you harm to lend your ears to Anda's Preludes.
The Schumann discs contain two different performances of Symphonic Etudes performed at different stages of Anda's career. The other works include also the Kreisleriana and Davids-Bundlertanze. Together with Wilhem Kempff, Geza Anda was a great Schumann interpretor in his heyday. These two discs offer an interesting survey of Anda in these works, apt for direct comparison with Kempff's Schumann set on DG.
The Beethoven disc contains Anda's own reading of the entire set of Diabelli Variations. If you are interested in Vladimir Ashkenzay, Friedrich Gulda and Maurizio Pollini's interpretations of this work, Anda's Diabelli again offers an ultra-interesting benchmarking point.
In a rarer still performance, the Beethoven disc rounds off with the great D960 Sonata of Franz Schubert.
Of particular interest to myself is Anda's two Liszt tracks in this set. The La Campanella is a breath-takingly beautiful rendition, entirely unlike the sorely virtuosic readings by contemproary keyboard virtuosos.
