This book creates a shrine to the ancient art of encaustic and actively encourages the current huge revival of this artform. "Encaustic" from the Greek "Encaustikos", meaning to burn or melt is the term used for painting using molten wax, fusing one pigmented beeswax into another. The bulk of this beautiful book is a gallery of current encaustic artists, displaying the many and varied uses of the medium. This book is very good for the encaustic artist wanting to move on from the basic landscapes and fantasy scenes, onto using the wax in ways they may never have thought of - unusual surfaces, burning methods, sculpting and combining with other media. The rest of the book is concerned with techniques, equipment (some that can be found in the kitchen or at the hardware store), and tips for selling encaustic art. Inspirational.

I have been an avid reader of Joannes blog for a couple of years now. She talks beautifully about the shows she attends on there and kindly shares lots of photos of some wonderfully talented artists, however, I was dissapointed to find that this book was not up to expectations. For example the part on image transfer is 6 lines long and there are no photos/step by step pictures of any methods. A considerable amount of the book is a portfolio of encaustic work, which although is nice (not all to my taste) and gives examples across a range of sculptural as well as collage techniques I found, mostly quite flat (but thats personal preference).
I suppose I was expecting to see some fine examples of how to create textures in encaustic work along with info on using oils with the medium (I cant recall info on layering wax over oil etc) with examples and ideas of tools to use in terms of household and everyday items and collage/monotype methods. I am a printmaker making textural collagraph plates, and was wanting to see some of the methods I saw in Joannes work in her book, however I didnt find anything more than what I already knew (basic technique). Its nice for a beginner perhaps but nothing new for me.

This practical and inspiring book has lots of examples of professional contemporary encaustic artworks. The artists included in this book are all pushing encaustic work in different directions and you soon realise the possibilities are endless with this medium, and there is still a lot left for you to explore. I really appreciated the useful information regarding the setting up of a studio, handling the work, packing for transit to galleries and information the gallery owners and clients should know.
