Format: Paperback
Good + Reference Book for French Art Deco Period Furniture. Well written and with a considerable amount of illustrations / photos (unfortunately most of the photos are black and white).
Alastair Duncan is an excellent specialist in Art Deco and if you can afford the more recent «Art Deco Complete» you should go for that. Art Deco Complete: The Definitive Guide to the Decorative Arts of the 1920s and 1930s
If not, this book is very good but it would benefit with more colour photos.

This 192 page book gives a pictorial survey of French Art Deco Furniture, in the period 1910-1935. The extensive photography is a mixture of [mostly] contemporaneous B&W photos of furniture in situ, some extracts from catalogues, together with some excellent new colour pictures of individual pieces and details. The text gives (in a variety of detail, some entries of a couple of paragraphs, other several pages) an alphabetical biographical directory of designers active in that period. Given that art deco is best appreciated and understood within the broad sweep and interplay of architecture, setting, materials etc, this is an excellent book to understand the lineage of French ideas through Art Nouveau to Art Deco and beyond.

HASH(0x913cdf54) out of 5 stars A fine book. 11 April 2000
By Henrik Moltke - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Alistair Duncan presents us 85 of Paris's Art Deco furniture designers from the period 1910 - 1935, including Eileen Gray, Dufréne, Leleu and Ruhlmann. This fine book contains a 7 pages informative introduction with e.g. the history and material of Art Deco furniture. But also 160 pages of biographies of designers, including 244 black and white illustrations & 68 in colour of interiors and furniture, each with a description. Each designer is presented in a concise half a page review. It makes this book an indispensable guide and frame of reference to french Art Deco furniture and a nice book to have on the bookshelf.

HASH(0x913cdfb4) out of 5 stars God, I love this Book!!! 18 Mar. 2012

I am 65 and decided to pursue my life long passion: collecting art deco furniture! This book is exceptional in presenting samples of art deco furniture. Everyday, I look through my book. The pictures blossom, the writing stands out and I feel I can touch the real thing via the images. I cannot understand why furniture manufacturers did not stay with the real thing. I love my book. I carry it with me when I visit antique shops. Cheers!

I am extremely pleased with the detail and focus of this book. Not the typical random compilation on art deco furniture. I wish I would encounter some of the pieces illustrated. GREAT book!
