Product description

About the Author

Egon von Neindorff is the last true master of classical dressage. A successful rider, he left competitive dressage in the 1950s, not agreeing with the demands put on horses by modern dressage rules. He dedicated his time to teaching many international students in Karlsruhe, Germany. His achievements were acknowledged when he was awarded the German equivalent of an OBE ("Bundesverdienstkreuz"), and appointed a Fellow of the German Horse Society. He passed away on 19 May 2004 but his influence will live on.

Neindorff was one of the last true riding masters who remained faithfull to the pure classical training principals. He believed in horse friendly methods of training and in this book he writes about his lifetime of knowledge in horsemanship. This is far more than a "how to train & ride a horse" book. Neindorff puts down on paper what is involved in the craft of creating a "work of art".There are 30 chapters;1.The Purpose of Education,2.Riding that Uses Without Misusing the Horse, 3.A Riding Horse Matures Only with Time, 4. A Good Seat can be Learned, 5. The Orchestra of the Rider's Aids.etc Full of lots of beautiful photo's, paintings & sketches. This has to be one of my favourite books in my classical riding collection.

It's a beautiful book with nice pictures. It give's a picture of the man, Egon von Neindorff, but not much about his philosophy or practical guidelines. More a book to give away as gift to an horseman or to keep in the sittingroom to lazely read while waiting for someone to come than a book to study in detail.

5.0 out of 5 stars Egon von Neindorff~ Art of Classical Horsemanship 19 July 2009
By Kay K. - Published on Amazon.com

I have had the pleasure and priviledge of being at Egon von Neindorff's Classical School on many occasions, and have studied with his protoge', Melissa Simms, since 1992. This wonderful book is the culmination of Herr von Neindorff's efforts to produce the original in German, and Melissa's efforts to do the translation. It is an exquisite collection of photographs, memoires, and instruction from von Neindorff that evokes many personal memories of a treasured and special period of my own riding education. Over 50 years ago, von Neindorff made a choice to turn away from the competition arena (where he had enjoyed much success and many victories) to develop his school of Classical Horsemanship in Karlsruhe, Germany. Pattered after the principles and practices of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, Austria, von Neindorff's primary focus was on the development of the rider, instilling in them a correct and independent seat that minimized any interference with the horse, thereby allowing, not forcing, the horses to perform at their highest level. To look through the photographs brings back all the memories of being at the School, the look of the horses, the riders, and especially the 'feel' of the atmosphere and attitude which placed the primary emphasis on the well being of the horses. All training sessions were quiet, focused and nurturing for the horses, with even the most intense and difficult work being done calmly and with love of the horse evident. I miss the School, I miss Herr von Neindorff and his dedication to the 'right way, and am grateful that this book came into production and finally translated. It will help to keep his dream and love of the horse alive. I highly recommend this book, so that you may share in this dream as well ~ you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for every horse lover 4 Nov. 2009

Having been a student of Egon Von Neindorff at the Reitinstitut in Karlsruhe, I am enormously pleased to see this book published. I truly appreciate the efforts of all the people who worked on the publication of this wonderful book. It explains the philosophy and teachings of one of the last great horsemanship masters of our times.

I just started reading this book and I feel greatly inspired in my riding. It has many pictures of correct riding and beautiful illustrations. Reading this book reminds me of his lessons at the Reitinstitut and I am glad to know that this knowledge "treasure" is now available to a wide audience of readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for all levels of equine enthusiast. 11 Dec. 2012

This is an amazing book with a great layout and lots of pictures. A must if you are a serious horse trainer or just want to have a great riding experience. I have both the Kindle version and the Hardbound. I bought the Kindle first and realized I needed a hardcopy in order to fully use it as a reference. Kind of difficult to flip through a Kindle version unless you bookmark pages. Egon von Neindorff is a legend and this book is a wonderful tribute to him and his methods as a horseman.

This book is amazing. I wish that more of our modern day trainers of both riders and horses were asked to read this book !! Our modern day "instant meals" "drive through service" should never be permitted in training situations ,be it student or horse!! Loved every page of it!!
