However, you should persevere and read it all (cover to cover) anyway. I recently returned from a Round the World trip traveling to 19 countries across Australasia, Asia, N. America, S. America and Africa for a period of 7 months. I consider myself to be quite well travelled, I don't carry too many possessions or anything too flash. I am generally cautious and always switched on. I rarely drink and try to be careful when walking around at night whilst abroad. That being said, these personal traits and natural caution would not have saved me from being scammed or robbed whilst traveling. This book did.
A number of small, more minor scams almost occurred while traveling. This would have entailed a financial loss of less than $100 and no perceived risk of physical harm. But on one occasion in Rio de Janeiro a scam started to develop of which I was the intended victim. This was a calculated theft that could have ended very badly (particularly given the poor reputation Brasil already has for violent assault and theft). This book made me very quickly realise what was about to happen and I got myself out of the situation sharpish. I don't know how events may have panned out, but at the very least this book has paid for itself 10 times over with the avoidance of smaller financial scams. Although I believe this book has potentially saved me from much larger financial and physical harm that I simply could not have ever predicted without reading this book.
At times it is a very daunting read, not least for explaining the manipulative and horrendous methods certain individuals will go to in order to scam a fellow person. But I am very grateful to the author for writing this book and I would strongly recommend reading it to anyone who enjoys travel.
