Top customer reviews
There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
I had recently had a few items stolen from the front of my house and also had some minor criminal damage a few months later. So i decided to take the plunge and invest in this system.
“Please see my Positive and Negative in depth Summary if you do not wish to read the full review”
I've had CCTV in the past but it was wired, so i was looking forward to having a wire free experience and also having the opportunity to have the video saved online automatically. A bonus feature if your cameras are stolen.
My biggest fear is that these cameras could be stolen far easier than any wired devices, so i purchased a screw fix wall plate to make it harder for any thieves. And they seemed solid and secure.
The Problems -
The linking system for the cameras is flawed though. It says press for two seconds until the light blinks but it does not blink after two seconds, it blinked bluetooth after maybe ten seconds but wouldn't blink the pairing light, luckily i pressed it and it linked it up, however their software and quick step information needs updating as this was a big let down for me.
The setup didn't take that long though, within 20 minutes i had visuals on my ipad from both cameras, and within an hour they were both outside and on the wall. For the first few hours everything was working perfectly and then suddenly one of the cameras went offline, even though it was the closest one to the Hub at about two meters.
This really started with alarm bells. These cameras are not cheap and for the same price you can buy four 1080p cameras and a hard drive with the ability to upload video to a private server. What annoyed me is that these cameras had only been up and running for two hours and already one had disconnected. This would be useless if you were half way across the world on Holiday. And it's not a very good first impression.
I had no choice at this point but to re connect the camera, which meant i had to climb a ladder in the dark and press the button on the camera and also the base unit. Luckily im at home, but if you were on Holiday and this happened then you might just lose that vital faceshot of the person making off with your TV. I just found this annoying, and it screamed “CHEAP” to me, even though i had spent £300 for only two Cameras.
After several attempts I had to unscrew the camera, bring it indoors and try and connect it that way, of course this meant that i lost my view angle that i previously set up.
With everything reconnected i decided to go to the live view and see how the night vision was working. I was completely appalled that the only thing in my garden that was visible was my shed which is white. And it didn't even show up that well. It was less that 40 feet away. You certainly could not pick up a face in a dark lit area if the person was even 5 meters away (12 feet).
If you read carefully you will notice they don't say the range of the night vision, with good reason. And this is a huge letdown especially if you live in a poorly lit area. Having said that, if you have a third party light source that activates upon motion, the camera does a good job of picking up details. But for me that's a huge letdown after spending £300 for only two cameras, and probably another £50 on two lights. Again it just seems lazy that Netgear haven't pushed the boat out. This is supposed to be a home security camera system and you missed the most important part, Nightvision.
I havent spoken yet about the actual video quality. Ive uploaded two pictures and they look quite clear. But dont let that fool you.
They are 720pixels not the full 1080pixels of true HD, even so the still images look quite clear when looking at large objects and stationary objects, any movement by a person is blurred and pixelated and in no way could this be used as evidence if someone burgled you or stole your car.
I am aware of the 1080p Pro cameras that Netgear sell and that they have voice but at £215 per camera that's not going to happen for me, as i can imagine it won't for many people. I find it a bit cheeky and outrageous that netgear can charge that much when their software and hardware seems flawed. Apart from being wireless, this system is way overpriced compared to the system i had a few years ago with 4 cameras at £260, for the sake of a few wires? And the night vision was 30 meters and crystal clear. So to me this system is extremely overpriced and not designed with security in mind, it just seems to me like they want to offer people some security at a very overpriced premium. I won't mind telling you all that i grew up with Netgear products, but after seeing this i won't be buying them again.
Like many people who purchased this they will be sending it back, apart from my wife until i explained why. What gets me is that Netgear expect people to buy this system which is completely useless after 12 feet, and then invest in their PRO system at £215 a Camera. Sorry Netgear but you can have your cameras back and i will be steering clear of your company forever more.
1- Easy to install and Quick to install, although a few bugs (1-2 Hours)
2- Cameras are small and have the option for skins to disguise them
3- easy and quick to view the cameras from anywhere with an internet connection
4- No wires except from the base unit to the power
5- The new cameras have backward compatibility and you can have up to 15 cameras wirelessly.
1- Very poor Night Vision which should be the forefront of any CCTV system for Security
2- The 720p System is useless after 12-15ft even on maximum Video quality for faces
3- Even at high Video quality you get Pixelated images and Video
4- Very Expensive and Very Overpriced
5- Limited to 5 Cameras unless you upgrade
6- Internet fails you lose the cameras
7- No visual zone to set the cameras, only a slider bar for sensitivity
All in all id only rate this 6/10, I feel personally wired is far better and cheaper and clearer, and that Netgear has exploited the Wireless Camera for those who want to stay up to date with technology. I feel there are a lot better wireless CCTV systems out there that are cheaper, however this is my review of this product and i wouldn't recommend it to anyone i know.
