If you bring a new system to the top end of the market then all aspects should be spot on, sadly they are not! I bought a 3 camera system. The most disappointing feature is the abysmal night capture. It will be impossible to identify an intruder. The IR beam may as well not be there as the range is very poor. You will have to buy a decent IR floodlight in each zone to get any sort of reasonable definition. 3 x £45 = £135.!! extra to pay for decent ones that are not too big and ugly. The second huge disappointment is the very limited directional adjustment of the cameras on the mag mounts.if you have a gable end and want to cover the side of it - forget it all you will see is the next door neighbours garden! That another 2 Arlo Smart adjustable mounts to buy at £10 each! The next problem could be very costly and that is the ease an intruder can steal the cameras. It is ridiculous to expect anyone to buy security bolts, lanyards and fix these to each camera for some piece of mind that an intruder may think twice about trying to steal them.
Possible losses incurred 3 x £229 =£687. Or alternatively purchase the wire cages for them which are very ugly! Around £30 each!!
Good points . Good daylight resolution, quick set up and Installation. No DVR to steal and thereby not losing the evidence,
No false alarms with car headlights!
This product fails in 3 key areas:
(1) Waterproofing Durability: Yes, the camera is waterproof. However 4 weeks after use of my wired camera where I'm using a waterproof cable designed for the Pro 2, I received a 'Charging fault' error message on the app telling me the power had been disconnected at the USB port. The forums are absolutely littered with these issues and Arlo pretend they dont know about it, asking that you check the base station, the battery, and your usb cable before attempting to rectify the issue. The problem is the micro USB port is not fully protected and will corrode outdoors. Once this happens youre left with an expensive paperweight. The camera has failed to survive a typical November in the UK and no longer charges.
(2) Customer Support is shambolic: I decided not to return the entire unit back as Arlo advised me that the cameras can be replaced under RMA. This was on December 8th 2018. On 18th December I hadn't heard anything. Contacted support, had to call 5 times over 1hr 30. Kept getting through to Netgear nighthawk support from the Arlo phone number. Kept being told to call back to maybe get through to the right department. Got through, RMA reprocessed, no reason given besides system error on their side. I'm now expected to get a unit sent out to me in 5biz days. (They send repaired units out under RMA in return for faulty new units from the customer btw.. but tell you'll get a new camera unless you ask more pointed questions). Dec 28th 2018: No update. Called up. 1hr later I'm told the RMA didn't process. Support apologises (after checking it hasn't been 3 months+ since I purchased the cam as they dont offer support for free if it has - ironic?). RMA processed again.. no reason given why it wasn't done peeviously besides a system error on their side. I'm now past the Amazon returns window and annoyed.
January 12th 2019: after sending 2 emails and receiving no reply, i call for update. Support tell me RMA wasn't processed due to issue with address on system. No-one thought to follow up or call me to resolve. I'm now being asked for credit card details as collateral in the event I don't return the faulty camera. I refuse to provide this as I'm out of pocket, product doesn't work as advertised, support don't seem to process anything. Support tell me they can't process the RMA without it. Issue is escalated and a manager decides to approve the RMA on grounds that it's the 3rd attempt?? I'm now waiting for the replacement to be sent out.
It's been 6 weeks since I raised the problem.
Wish I bought a Ring camera.. which costs less, looks better on the app, and they actually make a wired and wireless version of their cameras.
So what you get is the 3 cameras which talk to the included base unit. For each camera you have to individually pair it to the base unit which is very simple, press the pair button on the camera and on the base unit. Make sure you download the app on your phone and you can see each device once paired.
Each camera comes with a magnetic hold which you can attached to the wall by using the supplied screws. One screw and raw plug is supplied, drill a hole, put the raw plug in, screw in the screw but not all the way in and the magnetic holder simply slots in. The BIG problem is this, it is not very secure!! The camera is quite heavy and probably like most people, the camera will be high up in the corner of the wall and angled downwards. Due to the weight of the camera this moves magnetic holder (centre of gravity and all that). Unless I'm getting something seriously wrong, how on earth did Netgear getaway with this!!!! £600 and the wall fixtures seems to be an afterthought!!
Saying that, the magnet itself is extremely strong and I have no worries about this not being held to the bracket.
Once you have it all setup, you can setup motion detection and audio detection, arming the camera using Geolocation or schedule etc. Quite flexible in that respect. The cameras do not record constantly, you need to get the hard wire version for this. It only records when motion or Audi triggers it and you can specify how long to record for, the maximum being 300secs.
The app also gives you the ability to make your own "modes" and allows you configure what happens when each camera detects motion and/or audio, such as email, push notifications etc.
You get free subscription with this which allows a maximum of 5 cameras and holds videos for 7 days. This is obviously a bonus unlike some other well known brands which require you to have a subscription.
Like a lot of ppl I have reservations of cameras being on the inside, so ideally I would like the cameras to be off when I'm indoors. However, the only way to do that is to remove the cameras and take batteries out, I'm not obviously going to do this as it's too much hassle. The other way is to switch off the base station, bearing in the mind that the base station isn't designed to be constantly switched on and off and if you do this the cameras will attempt to communicate with the base station all the time draining the battery much quicker. So not a great option.
I've finally settled on just disabling the cameras in the app, however this does not switch off the cameras, it simply disables the camera so you can't view the live feed. I don't know if someone can gain access and still mess around with the camera, but it's the best I can do for now.
Unfortunately it means I have to manually switch on the 3 cameras every time I go out and obviously I forget or can't be bothered sometimes which defies the whole point about this camera. For £600, I would off liked a better and easier solution for the more private users.
You get two way audio with these cameras, but it isn't actually two way, you have to hold a button to speak but then you cannot hear the other side, it's only if you release the button that the audio then comes in, basically it's walkie talky style. Seriously, again for over £600 why is this not proper two way!!
Battery life seems very reasonable. my 3 week away and I checked in and live streamed every day and spoke to my cousin who was looking after the house quite a few times and it only used about 20%.
Apart from the wall fixtures and how it fixes to the wall, the rest of the system is very good solid quality and has a premium feel. If I could give this 1/2 stars it would get 3.5, but overall the system is good but it could off been so much better and to be honest felt a bit disappointed with some of the issues and lack of certain features.
However, HomeKit compatibility is coming to this version via a software update and I'm hoping that would solve the issue of enabling the cameras automatically when armed. Disabling the cameras when you're in means it will save a lot of battery. Having it just in a disarmed state just means you won't get a notification but still monitors for motion apparently so will drain more battery than when disabled.
