Arko Barber's Shaving Cream stick is the king of the inexpensive soaps. To use this stuff properly, thoroughly wet your face and rub the stick with a bit of pressure on the stubble until you can see a layer forming (you shouldn't use the stick to build lather). Then, take a wet brush and build the lather on your face. There's no need for a mug. Just keep in mind that this stuff requires a bit of water to get going properly. It has the most slippery, effective lather is one that is wet almost to the point of being runny. The scent is a classic barbershop note. This soap moisturizes well, lathers well, and provides enough lubrication that you can use it with any of your razors. It does require some fine-tuning as far as figuring out how much water to use when lathering. But it's fantastic stuff -- especially given its price -- once you make it work the way you want.

I don't recommended the directions for use on the Amazon site - I found it produced thin and watery lather.
I took an Ikea stainless steel bowl that fits in the palm of my hand and crammed the soap in it.
Used with a bowl and badger brush, this soap consistantly produces massive amounts of creamy lather which doesn't dry my skin or leave a scum on the water in the sink.
Each stick is lasting five months. It's not quite the cheapest shaving soap but it's very close.
The only issue I could see would be the scent other reviewers have remarked upon - but it doesn't last beyond a week or so.
At this price you could try it and if you find the scent too much then the unopened/unused packets will sit on your bathroom shelf giving a manly 50s barber shop feel to the place.
Recommended - five stars.
The scent is of citronella (lemons) and to be honest, I like it. The scent does get weaker if left in an open packet.
As I mentioned above, you can squash it into a bowl, its texture is like a stiff putty. I put one of the sticks into a cheap £2 stainless steel bowl obtained from a well known Swedish home store (four letters, begins with "I" ends in "A" with a "KE" in the middle"). The resulting lather would put a high-end shaving soap/cream to shame.
Don't think about it, just buy it.
First of all I removed some of the paper foil, washed my face and wet the stick and gently rubbed it on my beard all over. Then on to my wetted Edwin Jagger super badger brush and with a painting motion effortlessly lathered it adding more water as I progressed. Then to my Edwin Jagger DE89 double edge safety razor with Derby blade and proceeded with the first WTG pass and found there was enough lather left on the brush for the second ATG pass. All good and only one nick which was my own fault due to a momentary loss of concentration but quickly sorted with a styptic.
My verdict is that it's very good and deserves its reputation. The smell or shall we be kinder and call it "aroma" is simply that of traditional tallow soap. Stick your nose over a modern shaving soap or cream and you'll get that same aroma albeit masked by other perfume ingredients. It's not going to drag me away from Proraso shaving cream but that doesn't detract from it. For anyone looking for a superior shave on a budget this is it. But invest in the best shaving brush which is within your budget.
I was using a mach 3/fusion for the very odd time I would have a wet shave previously.
I then learnt about the art of DE & shavette style shaving and almost everyone saying it lead them to an irritation free shave, so I thought I would give it a go. I went ahead and purchased a safety razor, different blades, an arko shave stick, a Palmolive shave stick, proraso red shave cream and a shaving brush to compliment them all.
Anyway, the first one I tried was the Arko shave stick, I used proraso pre shave cream, applied the Arko by rubbing it against the grain on my stubble then proceeded into a face lather with my brush.
I was left a little underwhelmed by the face lather so I pressed my Arko stick in to a bowl and added more soap that way, which gave me a much more luxurious lather to work with.
Firstly, the scent is not to everyone's liking, personally I love the citronella/lemony/soap smell while its in stick form, but don't really care for the scent too much when its lathered, weird I know.
My Girlfriend says it smells like a public toilet (see where I'm going about the scent not being to everyone's liking) However it does not linger around too much after the shave so you can apply your own aftershave/cologne.
The slickness of the soap is immense which I'm lead to believe is the tallow working its magic, after 1 pass and rinse off the excess soap you can really feel the slickness on your skin which is giving great protection before, during and after passes.Read more ›

Peculiar stuff! I cannot make out if I like the smell or not. Not unacceptable. However, a good lather after spreading the stick on my face and then using the brush. Read morePublished 1 month ago by C. Lyne
