'Uri Dan was closer to this great Israeli than any other advisor or unabashed journalistic supporter, and their 50-year collaboration comes through loud and clear in this insider's biography.' - William Safire, Pulitzer prize winning journalist and author

Dan knew Sharon intimately and was privy to many of his secrets.
I would recommend reading Warrior first, and only afterwards read the Dan book to fill in some of the gaps, such as the tragic death of his wife and son Gur.

Sharon was one of the great men of Israel, who turned what might have been a 1973 defeat in Sinai into a stunning victory against two arab armies that attacked without warning on the Jews' holiest day of Yom Kippur.

Sharon's determination to re-settle the strategic heights of Judea and Samaria), the Jewish ancestral homelands was no less visionary. Never again will a arab armies be able to attack Israel with impunity from the commanding heights using flat trajectory artillery, as they did in Jerusalem in 1948, the 1950's and 1967.

Ariel Sharon was much maligned for a massacre that he had no involvement in. Sabra and Shatila was perpetrated by phalangist christians in Lebanon avenging a previous dastardly massacre of christians in Damour by palestinians. The arab world, as we see now in Syria is no stranger to massacres perpetrated by one ethnic group on another. And as there is a culture of the blood feud, the bloodletting never ends, even if it gets suspended for a time, until one party feels strong enough to carry out its bloody will.

Sharon's 'crime' was that he did not understand arabs and their history well enough to prevent the vengeful phalangists.

And now muslims of ISIS and Al Nusra and others, in Syria and Iraq are driving the christians out and massacring them.

They would do that to Israel if it were not for people like Sharon, Jews, Christians and yes muslims who themselves took up the challenge to defend Israel's borders from those who worship violence.

This going to be part of Israel's history demonstrating what a man Ariel Sharon really was. I have also read the books by his son with so many photographs, and his autobiography - the world won't see another hero like him. Ironic that Uri Dan died a few months later - in time to write this extroadinary document. I wished I had been able to read them before. Through this book you'll learn what a piece of history is/was - and all thanks to Uri.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tough Life 27 July 2013

The state of Israel has seen its unwanted share of unrest in its quest to build the state known today as Israel. With incredible odds against them, particularly from hostile neighbors through their history, they still have managed to become the proud country they are today. This could have never been accomplished without the succession of incredible characters along the way. The spirit of never surrendering can not be overlooked in the history of what they have been able to accomplish as a nation.
Ariel Sharon: An Intimate Portrait is the story of one true and tried warrior, who has participated in the development of modern Israel almost from the beginning, through the many crucial confrontations, a warrior account of what is all about. I found this book interesting, to say the least. It is so clearly written, that is a delight to read, really. Plus the fact that I have always admired their spirit of perseverance, and overall capacity to stick to their guns, sort of speak, this book will certainly please those who would like to know more about the inner world of this great nation. 4.5 Stars.

Kind of an odd writing style but an interesting memoir of Dan's friendship with Sharon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy 9 Aug. 2007

I enjoyed this biography of Ariel Sharon. The author, Uri Dan, had been a close friend of Sharon's and had insight into Sharon's thoughts. Much of the book is based on interviews Dan had with Sharon. Uri Dan did not mince words with Sharon about the Gaza pullout and other decisions that were controversial.
The book was written recently and is fairly current. I found the book to be an easy read and recommend it for those that want to learn about Ariel Sharon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally the context of reality of the great General, who passed away this week.[1/2014] 16 Jan. 2014

Uri Dan was a refreshing voice of truth and facts in his journalistic career and close friend of Gen. Arik Sharon, whose stunning tank strategies are taught at nearly every war college on earth. In the cowardly Arab massive attack on Israel, Gen. Sharon wound up surrounding the entire Egyptian Third Army. Tens of thousands of Arabs were saved by Sharon.
He also WON the [blood] libel case against the distorted, but influential...TIME magazine. But the slander and hatredagainst him was institutionalized by the well-oiled Arab/Saudia/Russia propaganda machine.
Rest in Peace, dear patriot and statesman, and warrior.

3.0 out of 5 stars I loved the book but 16 Feb. 2014

I loved the book but I want more. i would of loved to know more personal things about Ariel his wife, mother, and all the children and even his first wife, they were barley mentioned. Other than that I want more of his family and his realationship with them, the book shows that Ariel Sharon should be thought as another David who was constantly fighting Golith in his country and the world
