WA were always the quintessential Brit-rock 2-guitar band, both Andy Powell and Ted Turner (no relation to Martin Turner, the bass player/singer) playing dual lead in contrast to distinct rhythm & lead guitar roles as in the Rolling Stones. This had been done before: Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck with The Yardbirds, Peter Green and Danny Kirwan in the original Fleetwood Mac, The Allman Brothers. But Turner and Powell gelled so well and wove such complex musical patterns they became masters of the art; even after Turner left the band, Powell sought a second guitarist to continue the format and maintain WA’s unique 2-guitar sound.
‘Argus’ has a theme, and each song fits the mood. Listening to it can be a rich, even spine-tingling experience. It’s difficult to pick out highlights because the album gels as a totality and needs to be listened to as a whole experience, not sampled song-by-song i-Tunes style.
As with all great art, it’s hard to define exactly why ‘Argus’ is so special. It’s full of memorable compositions (mainly in minor keys), largely instrumental but with finely harmonised vocal passages in each song, and with the mojo in overdrive. Like Van Morrison’s ‘Astral Weeks’, Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ and Zeppelin’s ‘Runes’ album, ‘Argus’ is a milestone, timeless and endlessly playable, 40 minutes of superbly crafted perfection. It rocks, soothes and satisfies in equal measure, and has rarely been equalled.
