Ares Road is the second novel in James L. Weaver’s Jake Caldwell series. I had a lot of fun reading this book and enjoyed it immensely. Book #1, Poor Boy Road, introduces us to Jake, a man who has miraculously broken away from his job as a mob “leg breaker”. He has developed a conscience and has a fervent desire to go straight, though he has a difficult time staying away from “the action.” Ares Road takes us on Jake’s next adventure, a mind-bending twisty tale that contains giant doses of intrigue, high suspense, and nail-biting thrills. Jake is paired up with Jack Logan, a former cop and current PI who is helping Jake learn the ropes of investigating. Along for the ride are Jake’s best buddy Bear, who is a small town sheriff, and mysterious FBI agent Victoria Snell.

Jake is a terrific protagonist. Despite his past, he is extremely likeable. We get a glimpse of his family life, which humanizes Jake even more. He is reluctant to marry his sweetheart, as more than anything else he does not want her put in danger because of his job. Bear is also an endearing guy, whose repartee with Jake adds much needed levity to this taut tale. I am hoping we get more of Bear and his back story in future installments.

The story gets off to a fast start and the pace remains quick. There are baddies all over the place and a number of threads that somehow all slot into place as the story comes to a downright pulse pounding close. The vast number of characters and trying to recall their relationships with each other occasionally slowed me down, but this did not significantly hinder my enjoyment of the read. There are twists and sustained suspense throughout the narrative with really no dead space at all. I give the author high praise for this.

With his days as a mob enforcer behind him, Jake Caldwell’s trying to go straight, but it seems his past won’t let him go. His first job working as a private investigator turns up a teenage girl screaming down a dead man’s cell phone and Logan, his mentor and the only man with answers, beaten into a coma. The only clues Jake has to unravel the mystery are a Russian with a stolen silver briefcase and three names: Snell, Parley and Ares. Teaming up with his best friend Bear, the Sheriff of his home town, and an attractive FBI agent, Jake quickly discovers they’re not the only ones looking for the briefcase and its deadly contents....

The thrilling second book in the Jake Caldwell series is a heart-stopping ride that won’t disappoint the author's fans. I read the first novel in the series, Poor Boy Road, that was very good and this is probably marginally better. Jake is a former mob enforcer going straight but finding it very hard to stay away from his past. Despite his past, Jake is a very likeable character and I felt myself being drawn evermore into his world. The two other aforementioned main characters in this book are also sharply drawn and the story itself moves along at a breathtaking speed with twists and turns aplenty.

There are baddies all over the place, sometimes one or two too many at various stages of the story, but I am really nit-picking there. To give you the gist of the action, there are highly toxic poisons used to murder people, rampaging bad guys from the Middle East, piles of laundered money moving from one dead person to another, a kidnapping of a young girl and some badass Russians whose intentions are certainly not honourable!

Six months on from the thrilling conclusion of Poor Boy Road, Jake Caldwell is trying to start a new career as a private investigator, mentored by ex-cop Logan. Having rekindled his relationship with old flame, Maggie, Jake’s soon up to his neck in trouble though. Thankfully, he can count on the support of his old buddy Bear, Sheriff of Benton County. Jake’s moved on in his life, has a positive future in prospect so now he’s got much more to protect – and he will fight for it, make no mistake.

Ares Road is as fast-paced and action-packed as Poor Boy Road. It’s a thrilling mix of seedy clubs, hired heavies, retribution, mobsters, treachery, shoot-outs, corruption, fist-fights, conspiracy, fast-food and too much coffee. I especially loved that we get to eavesdrop again on the wise-cracking but heartfelt relationship between Jake and Bear.

I love this series as much as Bear loves bacon. Hurry up, James, and write the next one.

Hey, you! Yeah, you! C’mere. Don’t you remember a while back when I was telling you about this book called “Poor Boy Road” and how it featured this bad-ass named Jake Caldwell, aka The Man YOU Can Never Hope To Be? Don’t you remember that? Yeah, yeah. You read it, right? And you told me you really liked it. Fine. Now we’re up to speed. OK. Now listen up. The author of that one has come up with a freakin’ sequel! No, I’m not lying. Why would I lie to you? What, you think I got time to sit around all day dreaming up a bunch of BS lies to spread around? I happen to take my free time seriously and I also happen to be extremely choosy when it comes to pickin’ out fiction-type books that are worth my time. Not to mention my money. We clear now? Great! Alright, now get over to Amazon or Barnes and Noble or whatever other legitimate vendor of choice you prefer, and you get yourself your own copy and pay the full price. I don’t want to hear about any five-finger discounts. Got that?
What do you mean – what is it about? I told you. It’s about Jake Caldwell and his thoroughly aggravating habit of kicking the crap out of people who are causing all the problems in the world. Isn’t that enough? So you need me to go into detail about highly toxic poisons used to murder people, and bad guys from the Middle East who are on a rampage, piles of money changing hands, a kidnapping of a young girl and some Russians with – shall we say – not the best intentions. This is right up your alley. You love this stuff. There’s also a corrupt senator – but I repeat myself.
And just to refresh your memory, Jake has a personal life. He doesn’t spend ALL his time destroying the nefarious plans of really rotten citizens and visitors from other countries.
