I read this book quickly and enjoyed it as it raced along Therefore I was surprised when it came to a screaming stop and left me dangling then told me I would have to get the next book to continue or finish the story A bit let down and will be a bit cautious in future

Full of action, and showing us the dreadful dangers facing a gladiator.Whilst expecting the main character to survive the trials and tribulations he experiences- there is enough uncertainty to make it interesting
I am hoping that the hero of the books- obtains his revenge over his father's killers and reestablishes the family name.
The only disappointment was to realize these are "minature" books and you are soon finished.

Review:
Each episode of this has been a fantastic tour into the history of the best part of the eagles duo, Macro. He is the driving force, the charisma and attitude that has brought me back to every eagles book, and learning about his past is brilliant for every fan of the Eagles series.
Pavo as the gladiator is also a brilliant new edition, he is Cato as i wish he had turned out, rather than some of the more recent character traits (the mooning over his girlfriend). This episode has a bit more grit and power than the last two, and at the same time has a fuller storyline, but all episodes are told with Simon's unique and very readable style.
Part 5 is set to be a hugely action packed and explosive episode. (just in time for the whole series of short stories to be released in HB Arena (Roman Arena)

This is a must read at a bargain price

Book Description

The opening day of the Games in Rome is a time for celebration in honour of the new Emperor. But for Marcus Valerius Pavo, a young military tribune fallen from grace, only despair awaits. Along with former mentor, Optio Macro, Pavo must fight for his life in a ferocious beast hunt. Battling against lions and bears, he'll have to use all his wits to survive, as well as the help of a hated former rival. But when Pavo achieves a stunning victory, his reward is to be condemned to death in a chaotic free-for-all. Now the young gladiator faces a race against time to triumph over the odds, save his son - and exact the ultimate revenge over the Emperor...

I don't quite know why I have stuck with this series of novellas, perhaps it's simply habit. Each time I tell myself they can't get worse, but they do. The characters are wooden, completely lacking depth. The bad guys' motivations are cruel, transparent and silly beyond any reasoning and the hero's actions in response are utterly illogical. The portrayal of Claudius is stupid caricature, no-one can possibly believe it. Characters have these amazingly long conversations explaining their motivations and other plot devices when they are supposed to be at maximum exertion. Writers call this "tell" rather than show and it's just lazy. Besides that all of the books contain errors and inconsistencies that show they have not been properly edited. Self published work sinks to these lows, I don't expect it of Simon Scarrow. I know this is not literature, or really intended for serious reading, but please.
